    Willem,

Thank you for your information. It is very helpful. My nephew is in South Africa right now. He will be there for 2 years, so perhaps if SA would be a good choice, so we could have a chance to visit with him for a bit.

Still in planning stages. I do have one question for you. I have been in other countries before, but not with the kids. Honestly, I am a little concerned about what gets reported about political unrest and safety there in Africa in general. I know some of it is hype, but I want to definitely weight that one out carefully before committing. What can you tell me about that situation?

    Best,

    Shane Van Wey

    Hi Shane,

Being from South Africa it is always nice to hear of someone wanting to come and sample Africa! There is something that can be said for seeing giraffes drinking from a swimming pool, hippos wandering through a gardens, and pythons eating dogs…

    Some pointers:

    • Avoid our big cities (other than Cape Town). They are generally not worth wasting any of your holiday time on.
    • Beware of overpriced tourist accommodation. Here in Africa the American Dollar is virtually priceless, and people will do their best to relieve you of as much of your currency as possible!
    • Self catering accommodation is a very nice affordable way to see the country, and often provides better accommodation than you would at any of the high-priced game lodges.
    • Kruger Park (Literally bigger than the Netherlands) is a fantastic option if you want to come to South Africa, but pricey. A far better option would be to find accommodation in a town near to the Park, and to plan day-long excursions into it. It also gives you the opportunity to visit Mozambique, which is one of the most beautiful countries in Southern Africa.
    • Other than Kruger, South Africa also has a host of other big parks, which may be worth investigating. As someone noted, visiting www.sanparks.co.za is not a bad idea, as it is the organization in charge of our natural heritage.
    • Best time to view game is in our winter, when the bush is dry, and hiding places fewer.

Other countries you should perhaps consider is Namibia and Botswana. Namibia is a desert country on the South Western tip of Africa. More specifically you want to visit the Caprivi region in the north of it, which is an absolutely amazing swampland, bordering on a grassy savannah – this means that you will have access to animals from three natural ecosystems, making it a great choice.

Namibia shares a trans-frontier national park with Botswana. This as far as I am aware is the biggest national park on earth, and also spectacular in its wealth of fauna and flora. Oh, and Botswana is the biggest producer of export meat in Africa, so the steaks ar very good and very cheap!

If you need to have any questions answered, by someone who actually lives here, please give me shout.

    Warm regards,

    Willem Fick
