Rear Fender Flare Question
Hi,
I recently purchased a pair of 930 flares for a conversion project I am working on. Is there much of a difference is the shape/size of a set of flares for a '70 (my project car) and ones for a '74?? I know that the front end is different, but I cannot tell if there is much of a difference in the rear. I put the flares up to the car and they seem to fit pretty well. Any insights into this would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to hear from anyone who has done this and may have a tip or two to share about the process. Thank you, Tim PS-My e-mail is ylboyer@rcn.com if you want to respond to me directly. Otherwise, I will see your comments on this site. |

Are you 'updating' a long-hood 911 to a later short-hood with a turbo body? If so I'd try and find a mid-year car to do this to. If not, please ignore my comment.
To answer your question, if I understand it, the mating surface of a set of flairs should not vary between the short and long hood cars. Depending on if the flairs are from a factory car or aftermarket, their fit may vary though. Hope this helps. Tim K |

If I understand your question right, I think there is some difference in the lip between the RSR (early) and the turbo/IROC (later) rear flares. But I am not an expert.

The shape of flares of a racing car from 1970 differs from that of 1974. Lets call the former the early car and it would have what is called RSR flares.
Experts chime in. Look at your photos and scan pics for forum would put it right here. If you look at some authentic early cars you can see that the shape of their flares (ie RSR flares have a characteristic convexity to them that make them differ from the latter. The latter has 930 look flares which are popular.

I think what Tim is asking is can he use later style flares on his early body project.
If that's the case then the answer is yes!

HI,
That is exactly it. I have a '70 911 that I am converting to an RSR. I didn't know it at the time but a pair of rear flares that I recently bought are for a '74. I put them up to the car and they look like they will fit just fine. I just didn't want to start cutting until I was sure so I decided to see what kind of input I would get on this forum. I think that I am good to go!! Thanks to all that posted a reply. Tim

I'm glad you got the info that you needed. Do a search on this forum. There are different methods to help determine that you are maintaining proper alignment of the flares prior to welding.
Post pics too! Tim K |
