I looked everyday for postings of your progress. What happened? How did it come out? Are you going to repaint the original color? Replacing all rubber? Curious minds want to know. Jim

I spent almost $1000 for supplies when I painted my 914/6 in 1991. I am currently painting a 914 race car that has fiberglass quarter panels (with the flares) just installed as well as fiberglass hood and truck lid and a fiberglass top panel attached as well as finished welding the full roll cage into the car. Car was completely stripped and I have over 30 days and still am not ready for paint.
New rubber, trim pieces, change color, paint trunk, engine compartment how much of the car is to be disassembled - these are all the questions that effect the cost of a quality paint job. Plus if you go with someone who knows the car you have a better chance of a great job. I have seen paint jobs been impressed then opened the drivers door to see the jams only to see they taped the striker plate in stead of removing. Go figure. You will get what you pay for. I am interested in your project as I always wanted to weld steel flares on my 914. Love the car, but now have a 964 CAB that I am going to weld the flares on to make a widebody. There are many of us that learn and get excited watching others do their projects. Inspiration is what keeps us going. Milt please share any pictures you have. Thanks for taking the time post. Jim |

There are some pics under a thread called "gas welding flares." Yes, you comments are well taken. Here's a comment from one painter,
"I don't really know what to tell you. Most shops (me included) are very hesitant to get involved in a project when it's been started by someone else . There are just too many problems that could come up and inevitably it's the guy who applied the paint who is held responsible for them. Not only that but by doing most of the work yourself it removes a huge chunk of the "financial incentive" that a shop depends on to stay above water." We have the paint located and are ready to buy. It's in the $750 range for all supplies directly related to the paint itself. No prep supplies, which I have provided. |

Greetings - always nice to see another LBC P-car owner on here...
Anyway I believe there are some spray booths for rent over in Wilmington off of Anaheim Boulevard. Last time I was cycling over that way I saw them on the south side of the street and at some point I'll call over there to get rates and details. That's the way I'm probably going to go with my 911 - do all the prep here myself and then trailer the chassis and panels over there, shoot them and then reassemble everything here. I simply don't trust anyone else to be as careful with my car as I'd be and even if they were, they'd probably be so insanely expensive I could never afford them. A DIY job will give me a much better sense of accomplishment, I'll be 100% sure I'm getting what I want (right down to the original Glasurit paint and primer) and it will probably cost around $1000-$1500 whereas a "I-really-hope-this-guy-isn't-sheistering-me" comparable job at a high-end body shop would easily run north of $8000 (and yes, I've called for quotes). Yes, it's a lot more work to do it myself, but darn it if I won't know it's done correctly! And I'll have pictures for the car records!

Well, I used to paint cars and I painted my hood and door on the Carrera within the last 2 years (solid black). However, I'm not confident with the paint that is to be used. That's a lot of responsibility using $750 worth of material over a 2 hour period. Not to mention the exposure to the newer, nastier chemicals in the paints.
Also, my filter mask is not full faced, fresh air as what should be used in a booth. |

Long Beach Painter
I am also in Long Beach and will soon start the process of trying to find someone to repaint the tired paint on my '79 Euro SC. Did any of you local guys find someone who can shoot the paint for less than the value of the car? My old SC is only worth about $9K as it stands but I can't stomach putting paint on her that costs more than the car. There seems to be little choice between One-Day Paint and the $8K paint shops Any recommendations?
Kevin
