What's up with this 912E paint problem?
I'm looking long distance to buy a 1976 Porsche 912E and came across one that has the paint problem you see in the photo. From this single shot, can you tell me what the problem might be and how much it might cost to fix it? It's going to be a daily driver mess-around E if I get it, and it's for sale fairly cheap, so I don't want to put big bux into it. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Paint issue
From one picture it is difficult to tell what is going on. Having said that it appears to have pealed off rather then been scraped off.
Could be a few things but one BIG problem would be a re-spray with incompatible products causing a lack of adhesion, and or low quality paint. If this is the case it won't be too long before other spots start showing up as well. Like I say - too hard to tell from the picture - but expect the worst, total strip of paint to metal and good quality paints - lots of $$$. If you get that far you need to replace a bunch of rubber too, more $$$. I did my own 912E two summers ago, never tracked the costs or time but had a lot of both. Epoxy primer $150 gallon + reducer, paint was $220 gallon + reducer + hardner, sand paper, cleaners, other solvents, tape etc in all probably $900 just in materials plus all new rubber everywhere. Food for thought, good luck, Dennis |
