How much to budget for a paint job

I'm not a painter and have no idea how much money to budget for a paint job. The car looks good at a distance. However, up close there are quite a few chips on the front and lower parts of the fenders. also, the previous owner had too big of tires on the front and they rubbed, bending the inside of the fender and the windshield was replaced with a radio antenna iside the windshield. So, I'd like the old antenna removed, filled and painted.

Fortunately, there's no rust on the car.

I don't know the color. The title says on color and the registration another.

So, how much am i looking at paying? I'm planning on having it done in a few years.

Here she is.

Gary

buying a paint job is like buying wine or cigars . its how muck time a detail that you want to pay for the prep work . putting color in a gun is all the same ! but other than that is were the cost come into play . how muck of the car will you be happy with takin apart ? the hole car down to bare bones or leave most of the car together ? then there is the prep work will you be happy with a real quick sanding or do you want it wet sanded and blocked out real good ? now on to the coatings . will you be happy with a cheap paint that may at best last 2 to 4 years or do you want a top end paint line ? then there is body work how much does it need . and as you stated your not one some at time you may look at a repair and think its not that bad when in fact it may be that bad . so you can get a macco job for about 2000 dollars or a full out best of show job for 40k its up to you . just find out what they will do for the price you get !!!!

One reason prices are so high for a repaint is most shops bread and butter is from collision repair and therefore don't really want your work and can't aford the space. If you're lucky, you'll find someone to work you in but it will take months! So now you're left with speciallty shops that comand a premium and don't really do mediocre work. Your best bet is to find a painter that really likes to do sidework and has verifiable results.

Just for reference, I spent around $1500 in materials to do my own. A shop can most likely do better on price but there is a big expense for high end materials.

Will you do work yourself or not? I am planning on $1500 after I do 95% of the prep work myself (+ friends). That is using a good (not superior) material and having the painter do an excellent final prep and mask. Then I'll do all the re-assembly. I have a $600 quote for a decent single stage shoot as well from a known painter (non-porsche friend got his done there) if I deliver the car ready to shoot. So the $$ is really in the prep hours you expect someone else to spend. If you have lots of dings or areas that need special attention then it will get expensive fast.

Enjoy!

alot of shops will not paint over other peoples body work . i'm one of the shops that will not !! last week i had a guy stop in with a 944 that he did the body work to . what a person may think is ok when its in primer may not be . i could see so many things that the car own thought was ok . one of the things was all the waves . then there were all the sand scratches . when i first opened my shop many many years ago i would do paint work over other peaples body work . what i found out is the person that did the body work would never tell there friends that the paint job looks like crap becouse of the work they did . the blame went to the painter . all the pin holes in the body work ! O thats the painter , the paint is scrinking in . that too is from the painter . this one was a good one too . you paint is coming off . when in fact my paint is staying on his primer thats coming off becouse of real bad prep work . if its not sanded properly or there is to much primer sprayed on to much to fast to soon . it will lift and peal . so there are many shops that will not even look at a just paint it tipe jobs .

$1500.00 for materails. $4500.00 if you pay someone with a good reputation. But a lot of shops will charge you double that if they can get away with it. Ask for references from fellow Porsche freaks. You have a cab. so it might be a little less?

$1500 for material sounds about right. I wont be doing any of the work, but would like the body sanded down to bare metal. There's no rust. So, $4500 sounds real good. I was expecting to pay more.

why would you want to remove all the finish ?? most of the time people want to remove the finish becouse they think inn some way its best . when most of the time its better to leave the OE finish on the car . the only time you realy strip a car is when the finish is checking or delaminating 2 acid rain spots or other such staines . 3 or more than 14 mills of paint (about 3 paint jobs). when you strip a galvanized car you will also be removing the galvanized coating on the car . becouse the coating is only about 2/3rds of a mill thick it sands off with little effort .

Sounds even better. Wouldn't want to do more than needs to be done as long as the finished product looks good.

Hoping to find a good shop or person in my area to do the job. I live in Minden, NV, not far from Carson City/Reno area. The California foothills near Placerville, or Auburn aren't too far away. Would like to talk to someone if anyone can recommend someone.

If its original I wouldn't go bare unless she's rusty or the above.

I had mine done earlier this year. Started at 7K. That is a windows out, lights out, bumpers off, hood off, 930 wing taken apart, sunroof out but not a complete tear down. +1 on keeping the base paint. I ended at 10K because of extra stuff I wanted to do, new windshield, updated the body kit to a 964/965.

A big thing for me was a shop that doesn't mind taking pictures for you as they go through it as well as being OK with you stopping by to see the progress and taking a little time to talk with you about your car as well as having a good rep.

Stephan,

I checked out your car on your profile. It looks really sharp with the new black paint and Ruf wheels.

I was thinking of getting another car (a coup), but decided to put the money into painting my cabriolet and buy another car in 2 years when I turn 50. Thats why I'm looking for a painter.

Are you on the West coast?

For what its worth, I just received a quote from a shop here in NJ to repaint my '81 SC Targa (glass out, doors off) in single stage Glasurit GP White. $6500. Price does not include disassembly/reassembly (that's my part of the project) but does include going to bare metal only where necessary and repair of minor dings/dents and rust. Car is in good condition to begin with.

I am paying $2500. But I took off 7 layers of paint and primer myself and then let me guy do the body work, primer, paint, etc.

I fortunatly know the painter well so I got a great deal but he would charge double normally.
