Paint removal question if i want to get to original color.
Hey folks,
I searched the forums and found some great threads on paint removal methods, however none actually touched on what I was looking for. I just bought a 1968 912 in really nice condition, however the PO wanted a Red Porsche so he painted over the beautiful Ossi Blue. I noticed when I was doing some rear lens repair that the PO looks to have just painted over the original color, as some of the red is chipped off and the blue is showing below. How can I strip off this red "top coat" if you will and try to get back to the Ossi without too much damage. I do plan on re-painting, but want to see what kind of condition the blue is in. Thanks for any input. |

Well,
I got bored and starting using the heat gun and a scrapper.....worked pretty good. It may take a few weekends but I should be able to get all this Red off, then give it a good sanding and turn it over to my paint and body guy. Here's the result from about an hour with a scrapper and heat gun. ![]() |

you are making a mess out of that ! you have just made twice the work for your self . if there are digs in the blue like that all over the hole car you will be striping 99% of the cars down to bare metal . if you don't strip the car at this point there will be more waves in the finish than in the ocean .

Hmmm, must be why I'm not a body guy.
The whole car will be stripped to bare metal eventually, so what would you recommend. My shop wants to soda blast it, but last time I did that I had media coming out of places for a year. Are you saying it's best to just strip to the primer? I'm new at this paint and body stuff so help point me in the right direction. I like the ocean, but not on my car. Thanks for any input. |

I was just curious if it was possible to get down to the blue without getting to bare metal. It will all be removed eventually, but then 962 said I was making a mess. I was just curious what I'm doing thats causing 2x the work? I'm new at this, thought since it was all being blasted eventually I would so some stripping to "learn on the job" so to speak. |

I'm certainly no expert, but have prepped one car and primed. I think what he wad talking about is taking surface down to different levels, some down to metal some just to blue. Any discrepancies you can feel by hand will certainly show in the new paint. If you want to do it right, I would follow freddies advice. Lots of time and hard work. Using paint stripper will help dramatically, although messy. It entirety depends on the level of paint job you want... Are you looking for a high quality paint job?

freddie's posting is ok but there are many things wrong with it too .
if that car came into my shop i would blast it with plastic pellets . not soda ! soda is good for other substraights but for a metal bodied car there is no need to soda blast it . if your getting blasting meida coming out of the car for years dowbn the road then the person that blasted it did a crap job . when a car gets blasted it should be taped up as so the midea does not get all inside the car . when you strip a car with a heat gun you are supper heating one little area at a time this will just make for many little waves in the metal that will have to be repaired if you want the body to look straight . it's not a smart thing to do at all ! you could strip the car with a paint stripper but that too has it's pluses and minuses . the biggest minuses is that you will then have to remove all the old plastic body filler when there may not be a need to if the old body work is still good . it this point if it were me i would pull all the parts off the car and send it out to be media blasted with plastic pellets . when you get the car back from the blasters etch prime it then do the needed body work prime it and off to paint it goes . |

Thanks for the input, I actually took it to my guy this mornig.
He's going to start on it in a few weeks taking it to bare metal then doing any body work and changing the color back to Ossi. In the mean time I'm going to start removing all the trim, glass, chrome etc. Thanks again for the help fella's. |
