That's pretty brave Mr.! Not a project I'd be willing to tackle. Cudos to you!

That did the trick. Just make sure there are no high spots.

Leather is about 1.4 mm in thickness... I bought the complete cow and it was enough to do the dash, top door trim, pull straps, shift boot, key chain...

Thanks! I see the Tandy place is a national store. I might head to my local site and buy a piece to try. Is there a specific type/grade of the leather you used? Particularly impressed by the look of the curves around the gauge cluster - that must've been tricky. Cheers!

wachuko 03-25-2015 11:51 AM

When you give it a try, you will be amazed at how much skin, I mean, leather, can stretch... there were some cuts of course, to relief tension, but mostly it is stretching the leather in several directions to get it to the shape you need without it looking stressed.

Cook&Dunning 03-25-2015 01:58 PM

Great job on the leather - I have been lurking on the Tandy site looking to buy a full cow of black suede for my RS door panel project. Thanks for the pics.

wachuko 03-27-2015 07:21 PM

Installed the dash today... It will be fun trying to get a photo that shows the actual color...man!

And the bumpers are not painted because Alejandro wanted the lights with the lense to double check fitment... Engine bay and bumpers to be painted this weekend if everything goes well.

I might have missed it but can you tell who made the exhaust? About the baffles? Headers?

Bought it from Brian:

RarlyL8 Headers for Porsche 930

M&K Exhaust - SSI Brand Heat Exchangers

Baffles are Quiet Riot... also got them from Brian to save time. He sent them already installed in the muffler tips

Rocky Mountain Performance Quiet Riot Exhaust Baffles

wachuko 04-03-2015 11:09 AM

I need it to get it out of the living room... so I just put it on the engine... just a few bolts to hold it in place... I will take better photos later and then once it is installed correctly.

I can do the wrenching... body work and paint is all Alejandro... :) But thank you!

On other news... front corner lights came in. The ones that came with the car are beyond repair (same goes for the rear tail lights... looking to see if I can fix those with some donor units from a fellow forum member @ Rennlist)

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps98foinao.jpg

Installed the clear lenses (forgot to buy the yellow light bulb to replace the clear one... will do that later)

These came in from GT Racing. Billet aluminum door handles. Thinking of getting them powder coated black. Got two sets, one for the RS and one for the RSR. The ones in the RSR will stay without powder coating.

Thank you! Alejandro had to travel to Argentina for some family matters... he will be back on the 16. I hope to be able to get the car back a week after that. We will see. In the mean time I am buying the parts that were put on hold until the car was done.

I had no luck finding used 986 rear brake calipers... rear set ordered from Sunset Porsche as well as both side mirrors.

911-731-014-06 - EXTERIOR MIRROR (Passenger side)
911-731-013-06 - EXTERIOR MIRROR (Driver side)
986-352-423-01 - CALIPER (L)
986-352-424-01 - CALIPER (R)

Waiting for one of those 10% discount coupons from Pelican to order the rest of the stuff that I have on the wish list :)

78SCRSMAN 04-07-2015 05:13 AM

Nice choice on the mirrors... I struggled NOT to buy those.
What wheels are you gonna wrap those calipers with?

10% coupons seem to be illusive these days! Good luck on that one.

Me thinks yer gonna be havin fun in that car long before mine is done... jealous!

I missed the recent discount promotion Pelican had on Rennline products... and Rennline does their 15% during the holidays... so which ever comes back first. :)

On the wheels, this project came with boxes and boxes of parts... four of those boxes had 4 Rota Fuchs styled 17" wheels (2-17" x 7.5 Front and 2-17" x 9 back )

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/parts5.jpg

And no way I am finishing this before you do... miles to walk before I sleep... miles to walk before it is done... ;)

With the work that I have been doing on the 912 project... there are so many tasks that I want to redo on this car... yellow zinc plate all the hardware, powdercoat this and that... ohh I am far from being done!

My 1967 912 Build Thread

wachuko 04-23-2015 01:33 PM

Okay.... this is what happens when I have too much time in my hands since I can't work in the car until they remove this cast and the surgery from my biceps tear heals...

I currently have three rear lid/spoiler options for this car. Duct tail, plain lid, heavy-arse rubber spoiler (the one that came with the car)... all are done and painted so I will be able to switch between them.

All that to say that I was looking in ebay for some parts for this project and found a few 964 engine lids for sale... got me thinking, I have all the hardware for the 964 retractable spoiler that I had removed from my 964 when I installed the spoiler... so... what about a retractable setup for this project... I can use what I have with a 964 lid from e-bay, modified hinges can still be found (I keep stock hinges for the other lids) . Cool clean lines and then a spoiler at will... Your thoughts??

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psind2vllb.jpg

wachuko 04-24-2015 07:16 AM

Well... even if I don't go through with the 964 lid, decided to buy the hinges since those would be harder to get long-term. Got them from Matt.

For those wondering... the rear light assembly that the car came with are completely corroded.... beyond any hope for repair. I was looking at some plastic reproduction and Amber Lamps (Douglas) offered a set he had. These are in excellent shape!! I will install new rubber gaskets, I have a set of new lens, only need to make a harness for them and they should be good to go!

Here are the old ones. Corroded, cracked from corrosion, no reflective surface... really really bad.. can't even remove the back covers...

I like the screen for that oil cooler inlet. It looks bespoke - if so, can you shed light on how it was made with the neat frame? Thanks.

Sorry... had not seen this. It was done by the guy doing the body work... angle iron welded together. Mesh was then welded to it...

wachuko 11-29-2015 02:43 PM

If you guys remember, I have three engine lids for this car... and plan to get a 4th one (964 engine lid with retractable spoiler)...

Here is a recent photo I just got from Alejandro, of the duck tail in place... apologies for the lousy photos... just got them. I will take quality photos once I see the car in the flesh...

Trying to save the rear center reflector...

The letters looked bad... easy fix by painting them first black, then coating the rear of the reflector with gray paint (missing the photo of that step). Also took the time to fix a broken piece by pouring some clear epoxy... need to wait until it cures for shape it.

After all that is done, turn it around and using some plastic polish, try to get all scratches out. I will post photos once it is completed, but here are a few of the work in progress...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psoafk6xoq.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psxet1kalv.jpg

Painting the letters...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps4t3ypmyv.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pspr75kuag.jpg

Letters look a heck of a lot better... still work to be done, but I like the results so far...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pshbs3qrwv.jpg

Take a closer look

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps5tpybxyj.jpg

Epoxy poured to fix a broken area... waiting for it to cure before shaping.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psw1uadsiu.jpg

wachuko 12-06-2015 05:17 PM

The gray spray did not get rid of the difference in shades... humm... I must have used the wrong shade of gray... welll, too late now. It will have to do until I find a pristine reflector (or go the aftermarket route)

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psfz7vdgpf.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psphfbugyx.jpg

Polish got rid of the scratches... pending now is painting the black strip on the bottom and top of the reflector. I should be able to finish that tomorrow when I get back from work... and then on to the car.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps0xpx6etw.jpg

EDIT: Looking at the photo of a new one, looks like I am missing a mount with the two securing tabs...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pswtfyctdh.jpg

Man... a new one looks soooo good... but 700.00!! Yikes!

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps4vna4go4.jpg

wachuko 12-07-2015 02:34 AM

Broken piece fixed... not worried about the color since that is the stripe that is black... so now to mask everything else to get it ready for paint. In the original the black line is also from the inside. Since I could not find a red dyed translucent epoxy... I will be painting the line from the outside. 700.00, sob... 700.00....

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psloo4dfcl.jpg

A little bit more trimming and it will be ready for paint...

Now to replace the glass on the headlights as the old ones are yellowed and badly pitted... need to find out what is the specs on the small light bulb that goes inside... I would like to have that working. Currently that socket is empty.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psl6kiqwkg.jpg

Old one is out, new one is ready to be installed...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psrfv9j9zt.jpg

Done (well, almost done since I will have to take it apart again to install the small bulb...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pspfxsb42r.jpg

Rinse and repeat for the other side...

wachuko 12-08-2015 09:00 PM

I forgot I had a kit with a new Headlight Trim Ring kit... so I went back and replaced all the old stuff.. It all gets covered by the painted ring... but that is okay...

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/01...g?v=1428094203

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psydmkkm8s.jpg

Also installed a PIAA light bulb.

I still want to get the small 4watt (I believe) bulb that goes here:

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pspgond4qr.jpg

With painted trim in place...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pseyrvu0oi.jpg

Now, for the life of me I can't find the second headlight!! I am calling it a night and going to sleep... maybe it will magically appear tomorrow... those time people always forgetting to put everything back...

wachuko 12-09-2015 05:07 AM

Oh... and these parts came in yesterday...

Rennline RSR Style Stainless Steel Engine Carrier
Rennline Pedal Set - 4 piece - Perforated
Rennline Smuggler's Box Cover- Perforated

wachuko 12-10-2015 08:16 PM

Got this today... only reason to go with it is that I like the style of the Prototipo but the MW version has a thicker grip.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psuyglqase.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psd0s1msxl.jpg

And to compare it with the Prototipo (I still need to decide on what horn button to use... silver or color crest)

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psazmgpmft.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pshkifkbxv.jpg

wachuko 12-10-2015 08:41 PM

Oh, some good news. I found the second headlight. I had taken it apart, stuffed it in a box, placed the box inside one of those plastic milk crates, and placed it in a shelf surrounded by Fiat Spider parts... yeah, easy to find :roflmao:

This one is in worse shape than the other one... I will need to spend some time fixing a few things, painting it, etc. But at least I found it!

I also tapped (m5 .8 tap) where the bolt goes in to secure the headlight. Threads are now clean and the bolts go in without issues... And I did not damaged the paint in the process! The car is dirty so do not mind the looks... needs a good clean after all this is done. Well... and the hood needs to be polished, that was the only section of the car that Alejandro did not finish... he will take care of that in a few weeks.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psriduae7d.jpg

I also installed the rubber inserts that serve as drain...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psauvha23v.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psvpoc1s5k.jpg

One side done...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psrjoqx1jw.jpg

wachuko 12-11-2015 11:13 AM

The spacing of the pins in this emblem are closer than those of a factory emblem...meaning, it does not go in... by just a pinch...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s144/wachuko/207.jpg

So now I am thinking about just going with a factory unit... I have the one that is supposed to go on the 912... with the orange stripes. Maybe use that one instead...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pscd613433.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psa4f140a6.jpg

Or I could just slightly modify the holes... both emblems would work then... I guess that either way would be fine, this car is far from stock anyway...

wachuko 12-13-2015 10:22 AM

Any task takes so much time that it is not even funny! Spent the morning until 2pm and when I look back, there is very little to show for.. man!

Installed all new bolts and red washers to hold the fenders in place.

Started to install the door panels... still need to install the door pulls...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psagzm6vrn.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psuqvlpl7n.jpg

Washed the car and cleaned the windows... turns out that I need to replace both door windows as they are badly scratched... will look for replacement windows in the next few days. Those are not the wheels and tires it will stay with... those are the factory fuchs wheels and a set of new tires that came with the car... figured that I would use them until the build is finished and then install the ones that I have for it...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psh6w2rpp2.jpg

wachuko 12-13-2015 02:13 PM

Okay... this door is done...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pstdyvzcop.jpg

Doing the dash inserts... like those on the '70s 911...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...psheqwszk2.jpg

Could not resist trying out the new wheel... will come out, of course, as there is a lot to be installed before this can go in...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...pshq9pkjex.jpg

wachuko 12-15-2015 12:49 PM

I ordered this today for the dash trim :)
