The Beginning of another project - 911 SC NB RS

Well... RSR is not done and here I am starting another project...

Anyway... car is an 1981 SC. Picked it up a few weeks ago. Several boxes of parts. Stripped interior, a few rust spots, engine with CIS apart... yeah, crazy, I know. But previous owner looks like a decent fellow. If the engine and tranny are healthy it was a fair deal for both of us.

The idea is to use Derek's car as inspiration and get it ready as quickly as possible so that it does not sit for 5 years like the RSR did. I want to finish it and keep it until my son is ready for his driver's permit. I promised I will give him this car when he is ready (he just turned 10 on September 13).

Some elements that I want in this project:

1. Chrome mirrors (circa 1973)

2. Center filled gas tank

3. Spartan interior. RS carpets (which came with the car)

4. Some old style Recaros or seats from vintageseats.com or from GTS Classics, or... The sport seats that came with the '81 car I will be using in the RSR

5. Silly stuff, but I want a clock with the Tag Heuer logo in it...

6. For the interior, some black leather combined with caramel/tan leather, and some stainless steel or aluminum pieces with holes in it... still thinking...

7. I have a couple of rear engine lids, so thinking of having them painted all the same color so I can select from Duck Tail (this one I need to order), No tail, RS Tail...

8. Not sure if I will polish the trim pieces or paint them black, or paint (or powdercoat) them the same color finish as the wheels...humm

9. Love the Jade Green Metallic, but not sure if it will look good with the lines of the 911... so going with Aquamarine Blue (non metallic) 356 era

Color: Aquamarine Blue Non-Metallic (Porsche Aquamarinblau from 1957-1959)
Reutter Nr. 707
Porsche Nr. 5707

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/aquamarine707.jpg

10. Headers (no-heat) with dual outlet exhaust

11. Momo Prototipo Steering Wheel - Silver

12. Dash/instrument panel painted in the same color of the car. Love how that looks on the RSR project so I want the same for this one.

13. Four Porsche Aluminum Valve Stem Support for Fuchs wheel - I just think they look cool and give the valves/wheels a nice finishing touch.

I will continue to update the list as I get comments from all of you and look at other things that would make this car look cool.

Day we collected the car:

New gas tank

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/parts6.jpg

Boxes with original parts, spare parts, new parts... RS Door Panels, RS Carpet, etc.

Two sport seats. The seats will go into the RSR 3.0 project...

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/parts8.jpg

4 new tires for the 16" wheels... not mounted, need to remove the stock wheels and get those mounted.

I know I am missing photos a few parts... but I now need to start sorting everything and group them.

I dropped the tank in place, just to get it out of the way in the garage.

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/img_1465.jpg

Got the tires installed on the stock wheels. Will use this setup until the car is painted...then I will get tires for the 17" wheels.

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/img_1466.jpg

Also received the new fuel injectors and o-rings from Pelican:

and the shift knob...

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/img_1463.jpg

wachuko 09-23-2012 09:03 AM

A few more photos. Took a few hours to sort the parts and group them according to task... One box full of rubber seals, one full of the lights and covers, one with the heavy parts (bumper shocks, clamps, harness), one with interior bits (new steering wheel, shift knob, etc.), one with spare maintenance parts (oil filters, fuel filters, new set of original sparkplug wires, etc.), one with the RS carpet set, etc.

Old used parts (old engine mounts, tie-rods,etc.), or old/used maintenance items went in the trash...

Also, since it looks like I will go with the RS bumpers front/rear, stock bumpers, front valance, and other bits will go into storage until I have time to put them up for sale.

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/parts9.jpg

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/sort3.jpg

Air filter, cover and straps installed... still need to install all the CIS stuff... just wanted to get the air filter and cover out of the box and installed where it belongs.

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/sort2.jpg

A few engines shots (a few parts were powdercoated by the previous owner):

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/sort10.jpg

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/sort9.jpg

Painted rims on the H4 were hard to break apart... those will need to be repainted and the rest of the light housing cleaned.

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/h4_copy5.jpg

Also, I did not remember seeing this on any 911... but sure enough, it is a factory part (911.512.019.02)... and it weights a ton! I will give it a good clean, some back-to-black treatment, fix a missing bolt insert and later decide if I want to install it back or what... I have a spare engine lid that Jimq gave me... I am thinking of getting all three lids painted to be able to later change the look as desired. No wing, Rubber wing, or RS wing.

I kind of organized the garage... to have a little more space to work on the new project. Need to do a few things before taking it to Alejandro to do the body work and paint.

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/inspect0.jpg

Then got the car on the lift... car has new oil and fuel lines, new suspension bits, new engine and transmission mounts... once the car comes from the shop I will take out all the parts from the suspension and drive train for soda blasting and either paint or powder coat away...

Last night (Saturday, Sept 22) I got to do the list of all items prior to engine and transmission drop... also got all the oil lines out of the car, took out the calipers (two are new, a third one was restored, one is pending restoration but it is rebuilt), got the door handles off the car, etc.

So for the engine drop I:

Drained the oil... still can't get used to the amount of oil our cars use... cool
Detached battery ground strap
Unbolted shift coupler
Removed sway bars (rear one needs to be removed, front one I just removed to avoid getting any overspray or paint on it... a lot of parts in this car were powdercoated).
Got all the wires out of the way (reverse backup, speedometer cable, starter cable), disconnected the clutch cable, disconnected engine wire harness...
Removed accelerator linkage
Removed the CV Joints/shafts
Removed all the oil lines (including the side hard lines and front oil coil), heater hoses, fuel lines

I could not be left out of this ritual, lol. Oh, and pardon the shirt, hehehehe

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/engine_out13.jpg

And is time to take the car to the bodyshop for fender fitment, fixing three rust spots, and a complete respray!!! :jumper:

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/engine_out14.jpg

With the engine out I also took the time to remove the oil tank, cruise control stuff, engine bay padding (I want the engine bay painted in the same color), and a few more things from the interior...

http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/interior1_copy6.jpg

Pending is removal of dash (will wait until the guy at the shop removes the windshield. Also need to remove a few other bits of interior pieces to get them out fo the way. Headliner is in great condition, so that stays put.

That is all for now. The wait starts on the body....

I will take the time now to install the new sparkplug wire

Body guy told me that the car should be ready for paint in two weeks... for some weird reason that reminded me of the movie Money Pit... :D

wachuko 09-25-2012 03:57 PM

When I dropped off the car with Alejandro, body shop guy, (more like an artist with metal and fiberglass work...) he noticed that a couple of parts were missing. This is where the Project List from Pelican works wonders. I can store everything I need in there and then move to the cart when ready to buy it. Anyway, ordered the following from Pelican:

1. Molding on the bottom of the rear quarter window... missing from the car:

911-543-195-02-70K-OEM - Rear Quarter Window Lower Molding (Left) 911 Coupe (1974-89) Black Only Brand: Genuine Porsche

911-543-196-02-70K-OEM - Rear Quarter Window Lower Molding (Right) 911 Coupe (1974-89) Black Only Brand: Genuine Porsche

000-043-129-00-OEM - Ribbon (for the above molding), 5 meters 911 Coupe (1974-89), Brand: Genuine PORSCHE

900-144-009-00-OEM- Tapping Screw (B 2.9 X 13, 2 required), 911 (1974-89)

2. Need to order a couple of brake lines just as a safety precaution:
911-355-618-01-OEM - Front
911-355-617-03-OEM - Front
911-355-627-04-OEM - Rear
911-355-653-05-OEM - Rear
914-355-667-00-OEM - Three way line "T"

3. The Door Striker Plate, Left, and Right need to be replace, unless they sell rebuild kits. The inner plastic pieces are broken, or breaking apart depending on what side you look at
993-531-029-00-M737
993-531-030-00-M737

4. Car has a new set of amber turn signal lenses... but I love the looks of the clear ones: European Front Turn Signal Lens, White, fits left or right (1974-89)

5. Back-Up (Reverse) Light Switch on transmission with Rubber Boot Cap (for back-up light switch)

6. Need two H4 Replacement Lens, as the ones in the car are very pitted... 911-631-927-00-M14

7. CV Joints plates were missing... not sure if these are really needed. But might want to install them anyway... - 911-332-191-00-M100 - 12 needed

8. We used the new steering wheel on the RSR, so I need to order another Momo Prototipo Steering Wheel - Silver

9. If I decide to stick with the stock brake setup then I need four brake rotors. But also looking at TRE Boxster caliper conversion kit.

10. Chrome Side Mirror, 911 (1974-76). From TRE Motorsports

11. Current sport seats are going into the RSR project. So I need a new set of seats for this project. I would like to get the Sport S seat from GTS or the TRE Motorsports Classics Seats. Either one in leather and with headrests.

12. Headers and exhaust system from Brian Bodart.

I will continue to add to this list as I continue to work in the car.

Some progress... I have been traveling for two weeks due to work... so only have the photos that Alejandro has sent me via the phone.

The bumper needed a lot of work. Would not fit as it came so he had to cut it in half and cut some of it to make it work

Alejandro is taking the car to metal... on that passenger door, when I got the car, it looked pretty bad. I thought it had to do with some bondo used to fix a dent or something. Glad to see that it was all due to the many coats of paint or red filler used when prior work was done in the car.

He tells me that the coat he puts on is just to avoid the panels to get surface rust while he works.

You see where he marked with a black marker the areas he needs to cut and fix. He also found a crack on the door, where the frame enters the door. So another thing he will fix.

Fitment of the Duck Tail looks good so far. There is some build he needs to do to make it match at the top (not sure if you guys can notice the tail sitting just a tad lower than the car line), but overall I am pleased to see that it will not take a lot of work to make it right.

New lenses for the headlights:

Also, I want to switch between engine lids. Here is a photo of the lid that will be left without any spoiler. I asked that the holes for the stock emblem be welded shut...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...0RS/Body-2.jpg

Hood is done (taken to metal and then coated to avoid rusting while he works on the rest of the car). Waiting on the center filled setup to make the modification to the new fuel tank and hood...

That was the short update... here is the more detailed one...

First measured the center of the hood line... moved that to the tank and drilled the hole in the tank...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...dInstall-2.jpg

Then marked the hood ( for both of these steps, a plumb-bob came in handy). Alejandro cutting the hole in the hood:

Let's test height... remember to use the rubber gasket for the last test..

Last few checks before welding in place:

Let's do this...

After bending the metal around where the fiber glass finishing ring goes... some epoxy to hold it in place...

Back to the project...

I wanted to break apart the transmission from the engine to mount the engine on a stand and be able to work with some broken exhaust bolts, get the oil lines back dated, and have it ready for when I get the exhaust system that I want. I also wanted to inspect the clutch's conditon.

Good news is that it was easy to take it apart. And from inspecting the clutch, fork, etc, everything seems to be new.

Thank you for those that responded on my previous thread on questions about how to take it apart.

First I needed to remove the two tensioning springs...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/Spring-2.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/Tranny-9.jpg

Removed the starter, the nuts holding the case to the engine... put the transmission jack... and slide out the transmission. I am so happy that it did not give me a fight.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/Tranny-3.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/Tranny-4.jpg

Clutch fork, gaskets, o-rings, all looks to be new...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/Tranny-5.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/Tranny-6.jpg

Surface rust on the pressure plate...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/Tranny-7.jpg

And clutch disk also looks to be new...

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...S/Tranny-8.jpg

Now I just need to move the engine to the stand so that I can work with removing the old exhaust and broken exhaust bolts.

So far it has been going well... I would not say fast... wished the body and paint were done... But thank you for the kind words.

Moved engine from hydraulic table to the engine stand.

Oil line ordered (911-107-739-10-M127) :

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...1110773910.jpg

Also ordered the Clutch Arm Helper Spring and Backlash Spring for when I install the transmission back to the engine. And I ordered the Expandable Oil Return Tube Kit in case I mess up the return tube next to the oil line...

Everything should be here next week.
