Question Whata do about rust?

Hey guys,

Here are a few pics of some rust on my car. This is the only rust on the car (that I can see)... What should I do? I will eventually repaint the car but thats not in the near future.

Should I sand it, a little body filler, and get the closest paint I can find and do the spots.
Or would that look even worse? Thanks for the help..

That isn't to bad, but there's probably more rust lurking once you start poking around. Odd place for rust to develop with out any being in the usual places.

Pop the black window trim off to see whats going on underneith. If you have a molding tool slide it under and it will pop off. If not get a flat blade screw driver put a little duct or masking tape on the blade to protect your paint and slide that under to remove the trim. It has four tension clips holding on.

Next you want to remove as much of the rust as possible. Scrape away as much of the flaking paint and rust as you can with a metal scraper. You may want to mask off the surrounding areas to protect your paint.

If you have a sand blaster try and spot blast the areas to clean metal. short blasts so you dont aneal the metal. If you don't have a blaster go to Home Depot, Lowes or a hobby shop and get a Dremel wire brush, sanding disk, grinding bit. Chuck them/it into your drill if you do not have a dremel tool sand/grind to bare metal.

Once the area is clean you need to condition the area to kill as best you can what rust is left and condition the clean metal to help slow/prevent any from coming back. Get some picklex 20, POR 15 metal ready or similar product. Follow the directions on the product to condition the metal. For small areas like those it's probably best to dab the products on with a small brush to control the drips. Caution these products are an acid and will stain/etch the srounding paint so make sure you masked off all the good areas so you don't get any on your good paint.

Now you need to top coat. This is where you need to decide how good you want the repair to look. Do you want it to match perfect or good enough to get by until you're ready to re-paint. To do the job correctly you will need to seal the exposed area fill and fair the area then top coat usually by painting the entire panel or feathering in the paint. Metalics are difficult to match because of the metal flake.

you can get some product from an automotive store to prime/seal the metal and use a touch up paint to roughly match the area to the existing paint until you are ready for the re paint.

Follow the above instructions. Get rid of the rust and treat it properly. To really save and not have to paint match, I would just make a perfect parallel line with the trim and paint the fixed area black like the trim. It will just look wider and probably look good from 3-5 feet. Minimize the width, and make sure to tape off the work area so it doesn't get any bigger than it has to be.

Harbor Fright has these plastic pry bars for body trim.

4 Piece Nylon Pry Bar Installer Kit

The trim is held on by clips that look like an arrow head and take some force to get the to pop out of the holes. I started at the door handle end and worked my way forward. Do no pull up on the trim piece as it will bend. Just slide the thin tool forward until you get to the next clip.

Thanks guy for the help. I think I will try what you said above and then use the touch up paint. I have the paint code for the car.

What would you recommend i use for paint? Give the paint code to Porsche or Dr chip? Something else?

Your local dealer will most likely have the little bottles with the brush in stock so that will be your quickest way. You may need two or three depending on how much area you need to cover. If you plan on repainting the car some time in the foreseeable future take the car or something with the paint color like the torsion bar cover to a local automotive store that sells the rattle can touch up paint. You will probably be able to find a color that is reasonably close to get you by until you have the car repainted. When you have the car repainted you will want to have the area with the touch up paint removed to avoid compatibility issues with the new paint (or at least make sure you inform the body shop of your repair so they are aware of what they are dealing with) and to have the rust area re-inspected filled and faired.

You may want to try Carquest for paint. My local store will mix up any color from the code and put it in a spray can. Not sure if all the stores offer this service. Ive used this product several times and had good results.

trying to take short cuts will no doubt look like hell !
do the job once and do it right !
pull the belt molding off the car ( thats the molding that the rust is under )
pull the door handle and mirror off the car . if you don't have the tool to depin the plug on the mirror you can just lift it up and tape it to the door glass .
tape off the door glass using some cardboard and duck tape .
spot sand blast the rusted areas then E-prime what you just blasted .
let the primer dry and skuff it with a red pad .
you will no doubt have some spots were you will need to fill with some body filler .
do your filler work and finish it off with 180 or 220 grit .
spot prime 2 or 3 coats with a filler primer .
wet sand the filler primer with 400 or 500 grit .
sand the rest of the door with a product like SEM's scuff and clean or presta's scuff stuff and a gray pad .
wash it dry it and mask it up for painting .
wipe it down , tack it off then spray one coat of a transparent sealer just over the repair area and then a coat of blending clear over the rest of the panel .
let it flash off then take the base coat color and blend out the color just were the repair area is then clear the hole door .
put the door back together and be done with it for ever !

the rust is away from the adjacent panels so color match is no big deal but glasurit matches that color great .

by the book times your looking at
R and I the parts 1.9
repair the rust 2.0
refinish the door 3.1 with clea coat added
color sand and buff .5
cover car for over spray .2
haz mat removel 8.00 dollars
materials cost 200.00 dollars
all and all your looking at a 500 to 600 dollar job
or you can try and fix it your self spend a day doing it and then in a year or two you get to do it all over again .

+911... specially the part about doing it yourself and having the pleasure to pay more to fix it again,

Remind me to tell you about this funny story of how I should have let a pro paint the bumper... it is about not sealing the canister correctly on the spray gun and the canister falling on my leg and floor... how the paint still does not match, how I learned what fish eyes are, what smeared paint on a new bumper piece looks like... it is funny as hell... my wife is still laughing (just like the time that silver spray paint fell on the floor and burst on my new shoes... my work shoes now...)











I mean... why do it right the first time when I can screw it up, do it twice, and paid more to have it fix, right??

Great way to find out a good method for removing car paint from the skin... My right leg was all Guards Red to match the bumper... not the rest of the car...

Anyway, you might have better skills than I do... since then I just stick to mechanical work and let the body work and paint to a pro.
