SC Repaint Price Check
So I've been searching for a shop to do a glass out, bare metal respray on my '81 Targa (GP White) for some time now; have received quotes in the Bergen County, NJ area ranging from $7-20K, and that's with me doing the disassembly/reassembly.
The latest price I've received is $10,600 using single stage Glasurit w/ epoxy primer and Wurth sealers and undercoating materials. The shop will use plastic media to strip the car, will remove/reinstall front and rear glass, and install new glass and door seals and trim. The shop owner spent an hour with me going over the car and pronounced it straight and free of significant rust. There is some surface rust, and the left rear quarter panel needs to be repaired to adjust the contour. (There was a poor repair before my ownership began in 1986.) The shop is in NH and is well-known in BMW circles for restoration and mechanical work. I personally know and have inspected three e9 coupes painted by the same shop, and the work is excellent. So, just trying to get a barometer reading on the price and scope... Thanks! |

Doesn't seem terribly out of line.
Who pays if he breaks the glass taking it out / putting it back in? Does that include tax? What's the time frame?

No tax in NH.
Trying to determine who's responsible re: glass. Who do you think should be responsible? |

I'm at $20k for the exact scenario you're describing. They found a ton of rust and poorly done repairs that were not visible before the paint came off. I would budget for that just in case something evil lurks beneath your paint. I would say, $10,600 is an excellent price if all goes as expected. Be sure to agree on the level of work they're doing: long boarding with guide coat to flatten paint etc., and final color sand and buff if you want that level of finish.

Glass: very easy to remove, you could do that yourself. Are you replacing the windshield or keeping yours? It's unlikely to break coming out unless you drop it. It seems like a pretty easy install too - do a search there are lots of posts on it. I think breakage is unlikely. That said, if the shop will include that in the price go for it, then they're responsible. If they want to charge you more than a couple hundred bucks, it's worth it for you to do and take the responsibility IMO.

We spoke about getting as close to the factory look as possible so the quote reads "All paint work to original specs and finish"
Repairs to left rear quarter panel fender to correct contours are covered in the price. Was planning to keep the windshield and trim, but most likely will replace the seal. I'm more concerned about the rear Targa glass... |

Sorry, forgot you've got a targa - I have heard the rear window on those is a PIA. You will certainly have to buy new seals. I'll let someone else give you advice on the targa rear window though.

Just to follow upPaint shop will not cover glass breakage, but they've removed/replaced numerous Targa glass without incident...

Is the car insured? Most insurance companies will cover accidental glass breakage (windshield anyway, not sure about other glass)

Yes, collector car insurance...
From what I gather almost all glass shops will not cover breakage occurring during removal/installation. |
