Problems with engine lid closure

My rear lid alignment was not quite right so I started to sort it out yesterday. I'm thinking about running without the whale tail so it was removed leaving just the lid. I then removed both shocks and the latching post. I then aligned the lid by adding a shim on one side, removing one on the other and getting it centered just right by moving the hinges on the lid as required. Perfect I thought so I put the latch back on and centered it to the receiver latch, still no shocks. Good thing I went slow when I started to push the lid closed, the upper left corner of the lid started to move over to the left a lot - about 3/16". So I loosen the latch and move as far to the left as it will go and the effect is less but the lid still moves over to the left at the top left. I put one shock back on the left hinge to see if it made a difference and none. So against better judgement, I opened up the holes on the latch so I could move it more to the left. Now I don't have to worry about the lid contacting the body but it is not the way it should be and I need to know why and how to fix this annoying problem. Help please and thanks
