code 936 tip
Let me start by saying I've been in the body shop business for 27yrs. I can tell you silvers can be difficult to match. We use PPG DBC. I decided to rid my front bumper of stone chips so I took it off stripped it, acid cleaned(DX 533), gave it 2 coats of DP epoxy, lightly wet sanded with 1000 grit. Mixed up 936 and it was way off, way too course. So I did what any intelligent Porsche owner would do, search pelican.... I didn't find anything on formulas that were a close match so I went to my variance deck and found a BMW formula code 244 chip looked close so I sprayed a test panel, extremely close. Not sure how close a match glasuit 936 would be but I figured PPG is more readily available for most. Hopefully this will help someone else save some time. BTW my Porsche is a 86 with 59000 mile so the paint is in nice shape, mileage and year may make a difference on color match but its a near perfect match on mine. 936 used that color code from 1977 to early 1987 .
I have not had a problem with this color in 55 line glasurit . how ever I have had a problem with it in 90 line (h2o) . with glasurit they gave 3 offerings . 936 from 1970 to 1976 936 from 1977 to 1980 936 from 1981 to 1987 there are only two silver tints used med aluminum and med fine aluminum . all 3 formulas do change the amounts of the aluminum tints for each year of the colors listing . as the car was painted with 55 line and not 90 line I know this is why I did or have had problems with some color matching between the two solvent based and H2O based systems . we no longer will paint any thing that was done in solvent with H2O . |

 I don't recall the last time I had to do any spray out . with BASF they have color max chips they are real spray out done with real paint by real people using real Sata spray guns . what they do so you don't have to do spray out is offer chips that coincide with the car manufacture color code . as I was looking up a BMW formula and because the computer is not connected to the net I had to take a photo to post it .  they offer 8 color chips for the code BMW's 854 . the CMX-number chips are the ones I have so I will now go to the cabinet and pull the 8 chips for that code . take the sun gun and see what chip looks best . then mix the formula for that chip and shoot the car and out the door it goes . on the back of the chips they also tell you if the chip was sprayed in solvent or H2O . as this car is a 2012 it was sprayed in water and the chips for this color code are also sprayed in water . |

BASF does have a much better method of selecting the correct shade, PPG has whats called variant decks. Not all colors list alternate formulas and I find myself going outside the manufacture on occasion, as with my Porsche. As for the sprayouts, I have found doing them on certain colors gives me peace of mind and allows me to dial in the right air pressure. I looked up code 354, PPG offers 2 formulas actually sprayed in the deck and 1 designated for the "M" series cars. BASF has a lot more to offer in that area.

where BASF tends to fall short is on US built cars .
if it's say a ford built in Europe it's ok because they use BASF on ford of Europe cars but the US and Canada built cars the colors really suck . when it comes to getting good color matches I think it has to do with what the manufactures used to paint them and then going with the same manufacture of paint they used . because we mostly only do Ferraris , Porsche's ,lambos BMW's and such BASF works great for us . |

 one other thing I like about BASF is they offer formulas for things like bumpers . I have to paint a new bumper for my friends 06 Miata race car code 22v . as I'm sure you have seen many times we will paint a bumper or molding with the same mix as we have used on the main body and the color will be off a little . so we will use the mix for the bumper and the color will end up being a better match then if we went with the mix for the main body. |
