possiblt to paint just exterior

I've been searching and have found pretty much everything but what I'm looking for.

I have a 1970 911T. Original paint except for one rear qtr panel. This will always be a driver, not a show car and I'm really only interested in having it look presentable. Paint is in good shape except for some fading and the rear qtr panel is a really bad color match. If the color matched I would simply spend time buffing etc. I'm wondering, if it is reasonable for the body shop to sand and smooth the surface, prime and paint but only the exterior surface? The door jams are in great shape as are all the other areas out of sight. It seems like most paint jobs involve removal of all exterior components, doors, hood etc. and then a total paint job. I'm hoping to retain the orginality of the interior parts,..the paint code plate and such. It would have all the trim and glass removed of course.

Is this a reasonable approach to painting a car?

THANKS for any suggestions or observations!

Rich

Rich, you sure can, especially if it's not a color change.

Take it to a pro, as it depends on the condition of the paint.

Its definately going to a good body shop,..and I'm planning on taking most
of the exterior stuff off, door handles, bumpers, lights etc, but I was told that
they like to paint the door jams, the targa bar etc.

I was just hoping to avoid as much of that as possible.

THANKS
Rich

We do this all the time. We just finished an E36 M3 this week as a similar project. You don't need to prime the whole car either, just where filler or repair work was required. There may be some in process pics on Sublime Restorations facebook page.

Great, I am looking at this option in SoCal. I have a great painter that is willing to work with me ,though he is not a porsche guy.I am currently looking for a metal worker familiar with the 911 who can help with some door fit issues before paint. S
