Broken A Arm Front Mounting point

G'day,

I posted to 911 technical and someone very kind directed me here. The vehicle is a 1982 Euro 911 SC.

Here is the original post with pictures, Broken A Arm mounting bolt

Not sure if there is a better way to copy the thread over?

If anyone could help me understand how to unstitch the battery mount plate to better access the subframe, and best technique for replacing front A Arm mount, it would be highly appreciated.

Hi Stef - That does suck. However, as you now know, a replacement part is available. I would take the time to re-post your entire posting and pictures here. The pictures here will catch the eye of skilled people who are best situated to advise you on how best to proceed. Don't beat yourself up, it is all repairable. Best wishes.

Progress Update

Thanks to those who posted. Will update and continue the thread from here.

The recommendation to use a carbide burr (Thanks 962!) was a winner and really made grinding out the battery mount plate welds much easier.

From previous post, I was here, after foolishly cutting into the battery mounting plate to try and access the front left A Arm mount:




Using a wire brush on the air die grinder exposed the seams of the upper panel. Here is the battery mount plate cleaned up and seams exposed:





The carbide burr tip on the die grinder helped me cut loose the welds. Here is what I found with the upper panel removed:









There was some rust bubbles on the right hand inner guard that I have been ignoring for the last couple of years. I thought I'd have a chip at it with the hammer while I was in there, literally, as I was standing up inside where the fuel tank mounts. This is what I found:



No point being shocked or surprised any more, I now feel that I'm likely to uncover significantly rust to fix before things start to take a turn for the better.

Back to the job at hand, the A Arm mount. With the upper battery mount plate removed, I could see that the underlying panel forms part of the fuel tank surround and extends across to the right hand side of the vehicle as a complete panel. Back on the die grinder w/ wire brush. This is where I got to by the end of today.



I have a spot weld drill bit arriving tomorrow morning. Hope to have the secondary panel off fairly quickly, which should allow me access to yet another panel which seems to also cover the A Arm mount (see first pics).

I am new to all of this, so any suggestions on what panels I need to order, or how I'm going to tackle the rust I've uncovered will be greatly appreciated.

with the rust looking like that you should just cut out the hole pan and replace it with a new one .
a new pan wil have the mounts welded into it so work wise it would be better then replacing the threaded sleeve and then have to also deal with the rust .
you should have shown a photo of all the rot 1st .

When you say, 'the whole pan', what do you mean exactly? I'm unfamiliar with all the layers that seem to make up the pan, battery mount and fender inners.

Could you post a link to the replacement part you are referring please? Also, should I be trying to separate and save some of these panels?

I would buy a new right side apron (the panel were the decals are) .
new suspension repair panel it should go about half way back were the fuel tank sits .
it should also come with all the braces and brackets your cutting off now .
if the seam were the suspension panel welds onto the front panel is rotted out I would also replace the front panel .
it's better to get the repair panels then to keep screwing around with rotted out crap !
once you did get every thing apart you would have to weld it all back together and welding to rust out areas just doesn't work .
my feeling is do a job once and do it right so if you have to screw around with rusted crap then it's best to just replace it with new . it may cost more but you will be better off as the cost will be making the car worth more . having the worth more will covers any cost you would have to spend for the parts .
