Tricks to taking a 83 SC apart in prep for paint :)
Hi All,
I just fixed the sunroof and I'm going to start taking my 83 SC apart, including the front fenders, for a windows out repaint and I'd love it if you shared your tips. Thanks a bunch! Dale ![]()

just document how things come apart and tag and bag every thing .
when we tear down a car we tag every part even on cars we know like the backs of our hands . this way every nut and bolt goes right back in the same spot it was taken out from . |

Cool and it looks pretty straight forward - just looking for a heads up if there's a part that's difficult to remove. Thanks again. Dale

Sometimes the doors can be a bit of a pain to remove. Make sure you have enough room to store your parts, some good sturdy shelving is a good idea.

The Flag mirror's are a challenge.
You actually have to remove the pins from the connectors on the wiring harness or cut the harness to get them off. There is a pin removal tool you can use to remove them from the connector. Keith |

Take pictures before you disassemble. Use a real camera and increase the mega pixels so you can expand them on your computer.
Push the gauges out from inside the trunk into the passenger compartment. Dash has several of fasteners that must be accessed from the trunk as well.

Thanks for all the tips.
Reason for repaint is car has been poorly repainted and has some rust through the base of the windshield on the left and right sides. I'm going to be removing the windows, bumpers, valances, sunroof and front front fenders. The doors, hood and deck will stay on. I just did a window out repaint on my Syncro and it was pretty easy to take apart in a weekend and then put back together in two weekends. I will also be doing a new dash, headliner and carpet kit. It should end up looking good ![]() Where do I get the pin removal tool mentioned by Keith? Thanks again for everyone's input ![]()

Just went through this with my SC; all of the above plus make sure the photos you take are kept in the orientation that makes the most sense. I found that some of the photos I took were skewed out of necessity (tight spots, other stuff in the way, etc.) and when I went back to reassemble it took a bit of effort to retrace wiring, make sure connectors were in the right place, etc. I just found that the best representative photos of conditions prior to disassembly save time in the long run... Disassembly is so much easier than reassembly, so its typical to rush through it.

I am almost done taking apart the 80SC. For the mirrors and the headlight connectors, I used Lisle Part number 56500, Terminal Tool. Not as nice as the tool with the push pin in it but works well.
