Basic as basic gets paint job

Has anyone ever just masked up all the relevant rubbers and seals, given the car a decent rub down, and shot a colour over to change the colour? Seems every paint job I see or read about is taking everything apart and replacing this and that. I have a 1970 911 Targa and love the all original 46 year old feel, I don't want perfection. Problem is PO painted the car metallic burgundy from the awesome signal orange, which is now looking faded and cracked etc. I don't want a 'new' paint job, just a flat signal orange to cover the burgundy. The car is a great daily driver that has my two young sons jumping in and out and not a precious object. Any feedback and stories appreciated...

this was a sand it and paint it only job .
miata's are like nat's at the track just didn't want another all white one .
no body work but to get a little better job i did take some things apart like pulled the bumpers mirrors door handles .
sanded the hole car with 800 grit wet went over the car again and sanded with glasurit sand fix and a gray pad masked the top off and painted the lower part blue and then cleared the hole car .
i have the same type of thing to do to my porsche 948 over the winter break of racing .
many times if it's a road driven car you will end up repairing little chips and things too .
i did do a complete color change to a volvo S60R a few years ago that the guy drive the brand new car from the dealer right to us for a color change it's rear for people to do that but just the mask and paints are not uncommon .

Why not just try one of those removable paint jobs? Something like dipyourcar.com?
