Wheel Date Codes

I don't know if this is the correct forum for this discussion but it seemed the closest to what is available.

The question we are having on another forum is whether the factory sent out cars with mismatched date codes on the wheels.

Thanks for any info you may have on this.

Rahl

that is a yes and no !
you will find from time to time a year difference between the dates of production of the wheels .
i have two porsches with staggered wheels the rears on both have a year earlier production dated wheels then on the fronts that match the year of the cars .
owning one of the porsches from new i know that the wheels have not been replaced the other porsche i bought from the original owner that is also a very good friend of mine the 5 years he owned the car he never replaced his wheel so they too are the OE wheels on the car .
i was just detailing my 928 GTS and pulled the wheels to clean the back sides and the wheel houses it has all 4 wheels with a production date a year earlier then the year of the car , but the production date of the car is the 2nd month of 1995 so my guess is that the wheels were bought by porsche late in 1994 as that's the production date .
when a auto maker orders wheels they get them in bulk having a stock pile of wheels to install on the cars they are producing so it wouldn't be uncommon to find different production dates to the production date of the car .

They are only a thing because other people made them a thing. Ask your wife if she cares about the date codes on your wheels.

auto makers do not physically make many of there parts for there cars .
look as seats too you have seat manufactures making seats for automakers . they maybe designed in conjunction with a wheel or seat , steering wheel ,tail lamps and so on but auto makers do not physically make the part .
look at recaro they make seats for a crap load of auto makers .

when it comes the the production dates you could find them from a different year .

every one wants the car to be rare in some way or they want you to think there car is rare in some way .
one way is with the paint colors you see people saying they have a special color on there car because the COA states it's paint to sample . yet they have a color code on the door tag they get confused because the color was offered that year . the reason is simple the person that was buying the car new ordered the car in that color . they may have had to order it because the dealer didn't have the car they wanted in that color on the lot . it doesn't mean it's a 99 color code car but the car owner will tell you there color is special . NO ! you see people doing this all the time with superseded color codes that are only used for a year or two and the code they have gets dropped and yet they ( the car owner)insist they have a 99 coded car .

Rahl,
Best person to ask this question is Harvey Weidman- you know my opinion already.
