Shutz color match
Hi Guys,
Over the years there has been a lot of discussion on Shutz color matching on our old P-cars. As many of you may know Wurth is the OEM Shutz supplier. Our cars came with a beige solvent based Shutz that has been discontinued by Wurth. We can still purchase Shutz but not in OEM beige. While my car is far from original I did want to reasonably try and match the OEM beige. I have been going back and forth on what to do for quite some time as the relies on how to match the color weren't acceptable alternatives. At one point I thought I will just mix a little white Shutz and a little grey Shutz to get a very light grey that was about the same tone and call it a day. So I bought a few bottles of U-pol Gravitex. They have been sitting on a shelf for some time as I just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. The other day while surfing the net for Shutz I came across 3M Body Shutz 08864 and 3M Rocker Shutz 08874. The Body Shutz only appears to be available in Black. However, the Rocker Shutz is available in White and Beige. The beige seems to tan and the white is well white. I went to the 3M site to read the datat sheets. Both can be tinted and thinned up to 10%. However the data sheet doesn't really say what to tint the product with. So I called #M. The product can be tinted with enamel, urethane, lacquer and base color. So now I had a little something to go on. Today I started a little experiment to try and match the color. I started by scrapping a small sample of the OEM Shutz from my car to use as my base line. I then painting a test panel with white primer to lay my color on and match my sample against. While reaching into my paint cabinet for the spray can of primer I noticed a small rattle can of Mopar light Greystone touch up paint I had left over from an interior repair I made to my 2006 Jeep Commander Limited. It appeared to be remarkably close in color to the Wurth OEM Shutz. So I sprayed a small test panel of the Mopar paint to lay against the sample. The color is very close just to dark, which is perfect. This mixed into white should yield a very close facsimile of the OEM color. This week I will pick up some 3M Rocker Shutz in White and get a small container of Mopar Light Grey Stone. I will mix a sample and let it cure to see how it cures and the color match. I will post my findings. ![]() |

Use a prevail sprayer and call it a day. That's how I did mine.

So today I was able to perform my little experiment. I ended up using U-pol white Graivtex not the 3M Shutz. The U-Pol came in a 1 liter container which is 33.814 oz. following the 3M ratio of 10% pigment that equates to 3.38oz of pigment. I used just about 3oz. of premixed lacquer paint in Mopar Light Grey Stone as described above. I stopped as I ran out of paint. The final color is the large oblong center dab on the sample piece of old shutz. As you can see it is slightly lighter in color than the sample. Just to the left you can see where I lightly scrapped the sample shutz to get to a clean under layer.
After the holiday I may go back to my paint supplier and ask them to mix the Light Grey Stone pigments into an empty container. I will mix some pigment directly into the U-Pol to get an even closer match. ![]() |

Good work ! I'm curious to see how these new products hold up compared to the original solvent based chip guard.

Dpmulvan, this is a solvent based product. It is my understanding U-pol was the supplier to Wurth for the original Wurth Beige. So for all intents and purposes this will be the same as the original once the color is nailed down.

yes u-pol is the supplier for the worth chip guard !
you should be using enamel not lacquer . you can use lacquer but i found years ago it will not hold up as well as enamel does mixed into the chip guard . when it comes to mixing colors like beige they dry darker then they are wet in the can . you will also find this with many blues and gray colors too . so mix it a shade or two lighter then you think it needs to be then do a spray out and let it dry then look at how it matches . |

Thanks for chiming in 962.
The U-pol/Wurth info I got from one of your posts, that's how I knew. I tried to get some enamel in the color I wanted however the jobber I went to, to get the Gravitex no longer mixes enamel. I could get Urethane but only in a pint which was way more than what I needed for my experiment. Since I already had the can of lacquer above I just went with that for the test. Perhaps you can answer this question? Is the pigment used to tint the various paints universal? If you are tinting Enamel, Lacquer, Urethane, etc. do they all use the same pigments? Or are there paint type specific pigments? |

don't get me wrong lacquer will work it's just the lowest end product you can use .
i find enamel based products work better because enamels have a better elasticity to them then lacquers do and elasticity is what the chip guard has . and brings me to a point of why bad liner products do not work as good for chassis and undercarriage . pigments : pigments in the base form are pretty much all the same . tints : tints are the different colors on a mixing system that you pour together and make a specific color code for a cars finish . tints for paint systems tend to be proprietary . you can't in many cases use a tint from say the RM line with say the glasurit line . this is not to say you can't uses tints with some paint systems and make enamels and urethane by changing the binders as the base tint components are the same . from the base pigments to the can of paint on a shops or jobbers mixing system they go thru a lot of steps and different recipes to get there . |

962porsche - When tinting Schultz like the Gray Gravitex for the fuel tank with Enamel, do you have to add some sort of gloss or semi-gloss? The Gravitex has a flat finish, what would you add to bring the finish closer to the factory semi-gloss look?

So I finally had my local jobber mix me up some color. I got three ounce of diamond in the light Greystone as described previously. I also had him mix me three ounces two shades darker just in case.
I stayed with my original color tint and added a little at a time until I go to my desired shade. So far I have used about a half ounce of diamond. I am pretty happy with the shade. I will check in the morning after the U-pol has had time to dry and to see what it looks like in the sun. |

using the S/S enamel you do not lose the low gloss look as you do with using base colors .
they say you can mix it up to 10% but you can push it to 15% with no problems . for the fuel tank color the mix comes out to be just about 15% . |

So the tank color is similar just a tad darker. I posted this question on the board last night. Thanks for the reply.

the tanks are a different color then the chassis chip guard color . you just still have to tint the chip-guard as you are doing for the chassis .

thanks for taking the time to experiment and post your results. I have several tanks to do and this is very helpful. Always nice to have the information as a resource.
I have noticed the fuel tanks are pretty consistent in color and texture unlike the body shutz. |

So here is the end result. I did also end up tinting some Glasurit 22 to match the undercoat. The Upol when dried is harder and less rubbery than the OEM product. It also seems to porous I guess is the best term. When spraying a top coat Limco Supreme Plus in the inner front of the tub where I filled in the dealer installed AC unit, I noticed the top coat had little pin holes. So I decided I need to seal this before top coating. If this product is in fact "porous" I thought it best to also seal to prevent possible water intrusion. So here it is. I will post some pics with top coat later on.

Thank you. I am happy with the color match. It came out well. I am a little disappointed in the product as it isn't as rubbery as the original. But otherwise it came out well.

I have used the u-pol kit before so i know what your talking about,i like it in certain applications, but i stick with the wurth sks mostly. Is there a reason why you decided to not use sks?

The new sks is not the same formula as was used on these cars back in the day. In addition the sks does not come in the original beige. I was under the impression Upol was the supplier of the sks to Wurth and a nearly identical product except in color. So I used the white Upol as a base to tint. It also seems to be some what absorbent where the Wurth was not. I haven't looked into the 3M or a product called Tereson which has also been reported to be the supplier to Porsche. Don't know if they will be closer in final "rubberiness"? Is that word?
