Noob question about fender replacement
I am in the process of backdating my car. I am trying to do as much of the work as I can to learn something. I have a thread going here:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/819396-so-how-backdate-project-starts.html Yesterday I removed the front end and that was very satisfying. I found the seams between fender and chassis to be bare metal with a few spots of surface rust. There was some soft light grayish seam sealer between which I will mechanically remove. I am thinking I should seal the mating seam surface for protection against rust. Is POR15 a reasonable protectant for this area? Then I would put the factory seam sealer in between and be done with it. Also, I am thinking that this would be a good time to clean the wheel wells. What is the best method for a complete removal of the brown caked on dirt and undercoat? Do you think it would be possible to get rid of the brown material with a solvent leaving the painted surface and then reapply a new coat of protectant? Thanks in advance! the brownish stuff i think your talking about is the chip guard . leave it alone if nothing is wrong with it .
to clean we find the purple clean from ZEP works real good for cleaning the road crap from wheel houses . spray on a good coat of the cleaner and let it sit then power wash it off . once clean that is all you have to do to to have it look as it did when new from porsche . por offers nothing worth using IMO i don't like any of there products at all . over priced for the quality of there products . if you find rust between the two bolt on panels . just clean the rust off and spray a coat or two of etch or epoxy primer over the area then reinstall the panels . the gray seam caulk does a good job sealing out moisture all by it's self . as you see it's bare metal from the factory and it took this long to get surface rust to start . so it's not a big rust area you have to be concerned with .FYI they don't paint or prime under the hinges also and they take forever to rust too . |
Purple clean from ZEP and primer it is - thank you for your prompt and thorough reply!
