Receptacle under dash

I recently bought my first 356. It is a '62 cpe. While checking the wiring under the dash, I came across a small chrome receptacle below the ignition switch. The receptacle is in a vertical position, open end facing down. Inside the receptacle is a snap connector. I don't have a proper manual that would describe this item. Anyone know what it is?

This is an accessory receptacle, meant to be used much the way the cigarette lighter receptacle is used to power things like a cell phone in modern cars. I understand that BMW motorcycles used this type of receptacle until recently and plugs and accessories for it can be ordered from BMW motorcycle dealers. It is especially useful to connect a trickle or smart charger to your battery without opening the luggage compartment.
