912 engine help needed

well my little 68 912 project needs some help. Im getting blowby and loss of power from the motor. I did a compression check and get @ 90lbs on 3 and 4 and 120lbs on 1 and 2.

Is it possible to drop the heads with the motor in the car? It looks like I have room. Any comments are appreciated.

Also: if I do drop the motor should I replace the jugs and pistons with the 86mm "big bore" kit? Its @ $400 for the set with rings and they are cast iron jugs, not looking for a racer just looking to cruise around on the street occasionally.

Finally I see the rod bearings are reasonable but the mains seem outrageous are there any vw interchange on the mains?

Drop the motor, I isn't difficult and you'll do a better job. Take all the tin off around the cylinders. Big bore are okay and you should plan on replacing the rod bearings. also while you have the engine out check the cylinder heads and valves. Rebuild those as well. If the motor has a lot of miles on it or it hasn't been properly serviced, then split the case and go the full route.
You'll be happier with the end product.

Earl, don't worry too much about the main bearings until you have the crank out and mic'ed. If it needs polishing then you can measure and see what size mains you will need. I may have a set around here somewhere. Once you determine what you need look on ebay, sometimes you'll get lucky.
