356 A engine install, hints needed....
I seem to have an issue with getting the "A" motor back in....anyone have hints? I know I have to take the front tin off and the carb heater tubes......but I am getting hung up at the heat exchangers hitting the axles and the nose of the generator hitting the tin surround of the engine compartment....
It didn't seem to be so hard taking the dang thing out. Do I tilt it up at the generator to clear the body tin, elevate the motor, pull it back, then tilt it the back end up to clear the exchangers? Anyone have some simple instructions they are willing to share?

Mike - its been a few years since I had the motor out of my 65 C, but angling the heater horns, moving forward/backward a few inches, etc. is what it took both in and out on mine... may also be easier to remove generator & stand, maybe the engine tin, etc.

I put the engine in my 356 A this weekend. I was hitting in the same places. We found that the easiest position was balanced on a floor jack and going sraight up. We had removed the front sheetmetal, and carb heat assy, the air cleaners, the banjo bolts on the carbs. I also removed the rear sheet metal so I could see what was going on. We rocked the engine a little to get the rear horns of the heat exchangers over the axle tubes, and had to watch the generator pulley, and the sides of the carbs. The first time was difficult. We had to do it twice, as the idiot who had installed the mounts on the trans. put the bolts in backwards, and the flywheel was hitting on these inside the bell housing. We could not see this, and we could not push the engine into the transmission all of the way. We pulled the engine out again and saw where the flywheel was hitting the bolts, and put the bolts in with the nuts to the outside, and we were fine. I had three people though, me at the top and two helpers balancing at each side on the bottom. I am having one problem though. In mounting the starter, it seems that there is a clearance problem between the starter solenoid terminal and the bottom sheet metal of the car. One of the spade conectors on the solenoid looks to be bottomed up against the floor sheet metal. I do not know if this is an origional type starter. I hope that this terminal is the same as gound. The other small spade terminal on the solenoid will be OK, but the main threaded terminal for the battery cable is extremely close to shorting against the floor too, and it looks to be difficult to get any type of wrench on it to tighten the connection. Any experiance with this? Hope you got your engine in OK.
