Buying a 356C in USA

Would it be possible to get some advice on the best/safest way to find and buy a 356C in USA. My wife and I would like to buy a car and drive around for a while in the US and then bring the car back to NZ. We don't want nor can afford a mint car but likewise don't want to end up with a major restoration. We need a good driver with minor if any rust issues. the rest we can handle.
In the US is it ok buying through EBay? Should I sign up to the 356 Register and work through there. Do contributors to Pelican use the site to buy and sell ?
I presume the safest bet is a car from California or Arizona or the like nd also presume there are PPI people conversant with 356's. Any help or advice appreciated.

Richard, I would strongly recommend hooking up with the 356 Registry Group. Buying a car on the west coast isn't all bad and isn't all good. Don't make an assumption if it is out west it is rust free. I would also start dialog with a few of the independents on the west coast including Oregon and Washington. Bunch of good guys out there. Be sure to get a ppi prior to money exchange.
You should try to co ordinate your visit with some event in California or the West Coast Holiday in Park City, Utah.
Good luck,
Rusty

ps: I'm on the other coast, Virginia Beach, VA

Porsche Crest 1964 356C Dolphin Grey Coupe

We have the subject car and have had since 1967. It's been used as a daily driver
for the last few decades after being less frequently used for a few years while we
worked on one or more of the myriad of Porsche's we had accumulated. It is our
last remaining one but the time has come to set it on its way. Where in NZ are
you? We've wonderful memories of winters (during your summers) fishing in the Tongoriro while living in Turangi. We're now in Beaufort, SC. Where are you planning on visiting in the states?
We've certainly used this car for driving in the US including a coast to coast swing
to California and back. We've pictures and information on the history and status
of the car which we'd be happy to share if you'll contact us at kwinterer@gmail.com.
We sold various cars / car parts both through eBay and directly with buyers.

Tom356....you live in Beaufort? I live in Bluffton and recently acquired a '66 912. I would enjoy meeting you and seeing your cars and maybe getting some advise on my car.

Do you know of any good paint shops in the area? How about Dyna-Blaze on Boundrey Street?

If you would like, please e-mail me at rlamaker@golfersguide.com and maybe we can meet up.
