fastest 356?
I was thinking today that I've often heard about the Carreras, but I can't recall ever hearing how fast they were, or if they where definitely the fastest "unmodified" members of the 356 family. Anyone know which model was the fastest and its top speed?

Hello
From nowerdays view they where slow Depending on the body and some other issues they had a max around 215 km/h and could make the 0-100 under 8 secounds. I think the quarter was close to 16 sec. If you compare it with the competition from that age they had been average yet the cars raced in the smaller classes ( 1,5 to 2,0 L ) and had a very competive chassis, axle and brake setup. TZhey ouraced Corvettes, T-birds, XK, Ferraris, ,, whenever the landscape was curvy and the roads gave benefit to the IRS & traction package while normal cars had live axle and a hard time on the tires ( Tires had been the main goal to win, still today the best tire driver wins ). In fact in real race life only a 300 SL could ring down a Carrera. Yet the competition versions had up to 160 HP ( with stinger exhaust ) and the Abarth bodys allowed 245 km/h topspeed plus under 7 secounds to reach the 100 km/h. ( This is very equal to the 300 SL powerband ) If you compare it with nowerdays the 996 TT is a Carrera and the GT2 is the Competition version. And you will see the competition still ia around and still has the same problems. OK back then BMW didn´t had a serious race car on hand and Mercedes was pulled out of the game. This is in combination with maybe the best sounding 4 banger ever. When the first 911 aproached in 1965 he also had 130 HP and the goal to perform like the 2,0 Carreras Coupes. Auto Motor and Sport made a Data comparsion at the first roadtest and the new 911 indeed was a that faster on topspeed but missed the other numbers. Grüsse |
