Rennsport

Here I come. 3 days of peace, love, and rock and roll. Oh wait except the peace. Parking in the blue 3 corral. Camping in a tent. Doesn't get much better than this.

Will tag along with the early S bunch leaving out of Durango. Will see if the old girl can hang with a bunch of early 911's on hgh, ped's, steroids, whatever they're on.

Wish I was there with you...the little Notch is in Maryland and I've put over 500 miles on it this past week.

Drive safe and well.

I only got my brake issue resolved last week. I was ready to roll several weeks ago after initially thinking the conversion to discs in the front was good to go. The day before I was to leave the fronts got hot. Would not release the pressure in the lines. Like a check valve gone bad but there is no check valve in there. The kit I got was from Performance Products/Automotion. It had a single master cylinder. Long story short, got the Klasse dual master and all is well. Should have done it the first time. Ed at Klasse is a class act.

Will continue on from Monterey heading north along 101. Will go thought Eugene, then up to Seattle, take a right through Idaho and into Glacier National Park. It may be to cold to camp but I'll give it a shot. Then down through Yellowstone camping there if possible. Down through the Tetons to Denver. Then home approx 4,400 miles.

Enjoy your car, they are a blast set up right.

Will be there with my 550 Spyder... I would imagine I would be in or near your group of 356's if you are in the corral. Looking forward to Saturday and Sunday.. the only two days I could go.

Regards,
Bryan

Chillin in Tonapah Nevada. The drive from Durango was monumental. Texans like to brag about long wide open spaces. Never again. The extra terrestrial highway is truly other worldly. When they say next gas 150 miles they mean it.

Had a leisurely drive through Yosemite. No wonder the Cali boys are so proud of their state. 3 great days at Rennsport. Probably only 50-75 356's most restored. Mostly Cali cars. Pretty sure mine was driven the farthest to get there. At least I had the most bugs. Headed up 101 and exit stage left at Willits to Fort Bragg. One incredible twisty ass road. Then up to Eureka with those great ocean views and great roads. Camped in Redwood national Park last night. A very humbling experience. At every gas stop if they knew it was a Porsche they asked the year. Then the other half either had a Speedster or 65 cabrio. Uncanny. Horsesheet. But all friendly. Did not see one 356 on 101 north. Am in Eugene Oregon. Was heading up into Washington and to Glacier NP but it is supposed to rain where I was headed. Cold rain and no defrost. Exit stage right to Boise Idaho and on to Jackson Hole Wyoming. Was going for Yellowstone but 50% chance of snow. Great times and hundreds of thumbs up out on the highways and biways. Will post a zillion pics when I get home. That extra terrestrial highway was "out there".

Will reiterate what has been said before about Boxster owners. Heading east have seen 3 of them waved, nodded, nada. Tools

I don't usually wave unless waved at, except maybe at early cars (air cooled at least). Some guys in GT3s might appreciate my older car but the new Porsche buyers are a different breed for the most part.

Also, If I had to wave at every Porsche around LA my arm would fall off.

This morning filling up in Eugene Oregon where I guess they have to fill your car for you a 20 something guy asked what kind of Porsche this was? He said he had never seen a 356. Western Oregon following the McKenzie river up east 75 miles another great winding road. Once over the moutains from Bend on looked like a hilly west Texas. In other words pretty depressing. At least this time of year. Never saw another Porsche of any kind the entire state.

In Boise now. Heading to Jackson Hole tomorrow. Then in to Yellowstone and Old Fathful for a backdrop pic. Averaged 35mpg today. All of those long boring eastern Oregon roads and a 55mph speed limit. Only saw one highway cop so they must not take it very serious either.

Heading into Yellowstone but the Majestic Tetons first. Started cold as hell with no heat. Got my obligatory Old Faithful pic with the 356 in the foreground which is not an easy thing to do for any of you that have been there. Took the great loop drive. Got pics of all the amazing geological wonders. Actually misjudged sunset. Didn't really plan on driving an underlit 356 at all on this trip. The drive from Cody to Casper was a tag team your it, no I'm it across the highway for 200 miles with deer. Two bucks were actually squaring off till I honked my feeble horn. They actually stopped their joust and looked at me feet off the road as if to say WTF is your problem. Got here on a wing and a prayer. 4300 miles about 700 to go. All downhill. I've taken over 500 iPhone pics and half as many with my camera. Looking forward to posting them even if this place gets little
356 traffic.

Got home last night. 5034 miles in 13 days. the 3 days at rennsport were obviously not much for putting miles on.

Want to thank my wife first and foremost for letting me go. Longest we'd been apart in 35 years of marriage. I know it sounds lame but it is true. I missed her company because of all the beautiful scenery. She would not have made the 500 mile days let alone the 780 mile day with the Early 911S bunch from Durango to Tonopah because she just doesn't like riding hard like that. That was some white knuckle for me because I never knew when those skinny little 165's might let go. I was tail end sally because I couldn't hang on the mountain passes. And there were numerous ones. If I hit the canyon wall or went off a 500 foot drop off I wasn't sure they'd notice.

The Maestro for building such a great engine 18 years ago that still purrs like a kitten to this day and only used 1 qt of oil in all those miles. Half that 780 mile day because it blew some out the oil filler breather. The billet oil sump from Mainely Custom by Design that made changing oil a snap in Boise Idaho 3,00 miles into the trip. Vic Skirmants tall 4th gear conversion made cruising at pretty fast velocities possible. 4500rpm's an indicated 93 on the gps. The tires from discount tire called Arizonans. Great tires never let go anywhere and were pushed hard. Never lost a pound of air in all those miles.

The Porsche Gods for not 1 problem in all those miles. I had to oil the shift ball joint several times because of squeaks other than that nothing.

All the people that encouraged me to make this trip. I knocked off 4 of my bucket list check marks.

Pics to come soon.

End result.

All my friends who joined the the grand trip unwillingly. Ten states and 13 days worth. The Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada were mostly washed away in heavy fogs at Laguna Seca, then later in southern Oregon in mist and light rain. Some of those original hard cases remained I'm sure but these were more the western Oregon, Idaho mostly on an interstate. Then the Yellowstone east exit out of Yellowstone into Cody, the hairy wild and wooly 224 mile trip to Casper at night with highly underpowered lights. Then the downwind leg to Denver and home.
