Help on identifying Porsche 356 or 912 Engine
I've recently acquired what I believe to be a 356 engine. The aim is to completely restore it with the help of The Maestros videos, many books and of course experts on this forum. I am however finding it hard to determine exactly what year / type it is before I start.
The engine serial number is 7107A1 Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Dave ![]() |

While the pics look like 356/912 engine the numbers don't match. They can be a little hard to read but try Porsche 356 and 912 Serial Number Reference Site

Hi.
I've looked at a number of sites 356/912 but the 7107A1 configuration doesn't seem to fit in with numbering. 4 digits then A1 . I wondered if it was an early engine but a replacement supplied by Porsche hence the A1 . Or could it be one of their industrial engines ? The carbs are incomplete missing filter heads and again finding it difficult to match them pic attached . Dave ![]() |

![]() Here are the important number locations on the engine case. The build # and the type # located on adjoining bosses in the middle are the most important of all. Let us know what they are and we can help.

![]() Hmmm. Late style breather/oil filler. No fuel pump. Something funny going on with the oil filter lines. It doesn't have 912 motor mounts. The engine type number will tell you something about the case, but it looks like a collection of parts that may be random. These engines can be like a box of chocolates, you never know what you have until you open it up.

Looks to me like main case is a 1960-1963 1.6 L Type 616/7 B4 (1600 Super 90) but still don't understand the engine serial number .
I have a spare PICT fuel pump that I put together a while back from renovated parts so that can go on it. Dave Last edited by BasherBell; 02-20-2016 at 04:01 AM.. |

The way the 3rd piece is undercut beneath the oil filler stand indicates someone machined off the original serial number and stamped whatever they felt like there. Unfortunately this is a fairly common practice. Probably not possible to ever know the original serial number now, though you could make a ballpark estimate with the build number.

Does the third piece also have the mating # 13? If not then it is not original to the case.
When you split the third piece from the main case, look for date codes on the inside of the split from both the main case and the third piece; that may tell if the parts may match. A better photo of the serial # may reveal more about what happened there.

Carbs
The Weber carbs are not a stock item, and are bolted to adapters. Look like 40IDF, common conversion for the Solex 40P11.
