What engines can you put in a 356?
Aloha,
I was wondering...if a person where to acquire a 356 that is not a pristine gem, would the Porsche community go on a witch hunt if they put in a VW type 4 engine? Say, a decent driver that needs to be restored, engine is or isn't original but needs to be rebuilt. Would it be sacrilege to not restore it to showroom stock? mahalo, Joel |
Hi Joel,
I'm 99% sure it will"fit" in there,but you might have to address things like flywheels,starters,linkage,exhaust,engine hanger.12volt/6volt,blah,blah'blah,BUT,if anyone knows,Harry Pellows does.Drop him an e-mail:D http://www.hcpresearch.com/index.htmlSmileWavy Good luck |
Aloha,
Thanks Steve. I'll check out that link. Another question: Is the 356 community pretty well set in restoring these cars to stock condition, or is it 'okay' to do what you like with them? I haven't seen many 356's that have been done up in a resto-custom type of style; most of them seem to be stockers. mahalos, Joel |
I think it's either one or the other. Either stock...verging on concours or, outlaw with a 3.2 in the back with 400HP.

Mahalos!
I'd love an outlaw from Parts Obsolete...but that's mega $$. aloha, Joel |
I wonder if anyone has done a 3.6 liter conversion???

Considering what a nicely restored 356 sells for you should at least consider studying up on a 912 engine. More than 100 hp with drum brakes? Go to 912registry.org
Good luck Jim in Ma. |
