Question What engines can you put in a 356?

Aloha,

I was wondering...if a person where to acquire a 356 that is not a pristine gem, would the Porsche community go on a witch hunt if they put in a VW type 4 engine?

Say, a decent driver that needs to be restored, engine is or isn't original but needs to be rebuilt. Would it be sacrilege to not restore it to showroom stock?

mahalo,
Joel

Hi Joel,

I'm 99% sure it will"fit" in there, but you might have to address things like flywheels, starters, linkage, exhaust, engine hanger.12volt/6volt,blah,blah'blah,BUT,if anyone knows,Harry Pellows does.Drop him an e-mail

Aloha,

Thanks Steve. I'll check out that link.

Another question: Is the 356 community pretty well set in restoring these cars to stock condition, or is it 'okay' to do what you like with them? I haven't seen many 356's that have been done up in a resto-custom type of style; most of them seem to be stockers.

mahalos,
Joel

I think it's either one or the other. Either stock...verging on concours or, outlaw with a 3.2 in the back with 400HP.

Considering what a nicely restored 356 sells for you should at least consider studying up on a 912 engine. More than 100 hp with drum brakes? Go to 912registry.org
Good luck
Jim in Ma.
