Who restores oil tanks?

Does anyone recommend someone who can restore the external oil tanks back to factory finish?
I need mine flushed out, cleaned up, and repainted with replacement float and sensor.

Thanks!

Your friendly local radiator shop would be able to boil it out as you describe. I disassembled one and took it recently to a shop like this and they boiled it overnight cleaning it out as best as they were able. They painted it after for under $80. I installed a new float sensor and was done.

I took mine to a local Radiator shop and had it hot tanked and pressure tested. Our host has everything else you need.

Do it yourself!

Like others here, I too took my 1973.5T oil tank to a radiator shop who boiled it (same caustic solution used for radiator cleaning). I primed it and painted it with POR 15 black paint that came out to a very nice semi-glossy finish. The float mechanism and cork gasket can be bought online (see Pelican), which is easy to install. The POR 15 gives it a rock hard coating that helps seal the seams and adds a layer of protection. The only part of the tank you see when looking underneath is the bottom portion.......so as far as the "factor finish" goes, if you MUST, just match the color (black). POR coating products are excellent here for this type of application.

This. They will also extend/baffle oil tanks in addition to cleaning/pressure testing. FAA certified to work on aircraft oil tanks/radiators (their main client base)

Pacific oil cooler did mine as well, and they did my engine oil cooler. I will use them again.

CAUTION!!!!

I had an oil leak coming from my oil tank in my 1973.5T. At first I could not detect where it came from, but I would find a small puddle of oil on the garage floor after a long drive.

It turned out that once I removed the tank I discovered a hairline crack on the weld that holds the bracket that attaches to the body of the car. The oil level rises considerably when hot and reached the level of the mounting bracket. The tank has two on top. Vibration over the years must have created the crack. After I had the tank cleaned at a radiator shop, I had the weld ground down and re-welded.

As rare as this may occur, its good advice to check the welds that hold these brackets. You never know!

Thanks Bob... I'll have to double check that.
