86 carrera won't turn over

Car has never not started on the first turn of the key. This morning, no turn over. Cranks 'strongly' but won't start?

Change out your DME relay located under the driver's seat...

no relay

I think that the DME relay started with the 87 engine. I called my new Porsche mechanic and there is a similar sensor in the engine compartment...

DME started with 3.2 Carrera in 84. My 86 has one. Your 86 should have one. Everyone should keep a spare in their glovebox. The only time my 86 didn't start it was the DME relay. Your mechanic is likely talking about the speed and reference sensors in the fly wheel. If he doesn't know about the DME relay you might want to reevaluate your mechanic.

With model 84 the DME and it's DME relay are present. And yes the relays have a poor track record. However, rather than throwing parts at it why not methodically test what's preventing the car from starting:

- turn ignition to ON and make sure the ICV vibrates -> confirms system gets power from ignition switch
- check for fuel with NOID light (or add starter fluid to intake)
- check for spark while cranking with timing light, LED test light or old spark plug
- check if you can make the fuel pump run by disconnecting DME and jumper between pin19 and pin 20 inside DME harness connector with ignition ON

^^^^THIS, btw, when you state that the car wont "turn over" that implies the starter is not engaging to "turn over" or crank the engine. I know its cranking over from what you wrote though, just wanted to clarify the terminology.

Thanks for everyone's input. I am confident in my mechanic for many reasons. I think that I messed up the terminology. To clarify, I tun the key, the starter cranks the engine, it sounds correct , but it does not 'engage' or remaining running/started.
I am going to eval it and get an extra DME.

Go solid state!

Focus 9 has created a solid state version for not too much more than the stock part. Solid State = longer time to fail (if ever)

Just jump it. If it starts you'll have found the problem.
