New to me 77S meet Bandit

Bought this one from a guy who finds em and flips em.

No start and lots of patina, been sitting 5 years in an auto body shop in Western Pa waiting to be resprayed was the story I got, also that the motor was "done".

It's numbers matching and all original. It was one big vacuum leak. When I got it running, it continually REALLY fogged the neighborhood. I was worried but hopeful because I knew it had been sitting a long time..but it just kept on smoking really bad.

It came with a box of new trim and new OE headliner which to me, meant the story was true and it was waiting for a repaint.
The original toolkit was lifted by the flipper who advertised it as "even having it's toolkit". When I cleaned it out, I remembered this and noticed it was gone.

So in the huge Pelican parts box in the rear seating area, (new weindshield trims) I found the the receipt and the real owners name, address and cell number from about 6 years ago.

I called John from Pittsburgh, and he assured me the car ran and shifted like a champ, didn't smoke and the motor was done.

So I kept fogging the neighborhood and while standing behind the car cautiously revving the motor, I noticed there was a fair amount of water coming out of its sport muffler and earlier heat exchangers.

There was a lot of water sitting in the stainless steel exhaust.

I kept running it and when it cleared sure enough not a puff of smoke. It revs to the moon (2,7 7R magnesium case) and shifts better than any 915 I've shifted.

John said while getting inspection stickers it was backed into (driver's quarter) and his guy was slow to repair it. Ater 5 years, his wife told him to sell the car.

What will I do with this India red 77? Not entirely sure but it's fun!

I originally planned to leave it original by carefully blending the quarter which is now ready for paint. I thought then I could using the same color primer, buff through purposely after spot repairing to get the same look.

I've owned it for 6 weeks or more so I've also thought of backdating, flares, duck, no duck and Continental Orange as a subtle color change w/in the family.

But may be keep it The original color and do a straight restoration like I used to do early on in my car guy life.

I'm kinda sick of seeing 911s get butchered. Either way, it'll be easily brought back to stock if I do mod it.

So now I'm leaning heavily toward a straight restoration keeping it a G series, narrow bodied car. It'll be lowered with as fat a tire that'll fit and just enjoyed and made a DD.

It's got adjustable Konis up front and new rears now and is definitely a Bandit!

I know that color primer..

So we're just enjoying it and getting the CIS bugs out now which doesn't take kindly to sitting for 5 years.

I have to say, a good running 2.7 is a blast and it sounds like the S Steve McQueen drove in the first few minutes of our favorite movie.
There's video of it driving on my Instagram.

Oh and I paid $17,100, for anyone who's wondering. I took a leap of faith the smoke was from sitting. Besides the flipper wouldn't go lower. Or would he have??

Sweet ride! I have a 77s as well. Was originally the same color, but a PO had it painted black and added 964 bumpers and SC flairs. I call it "The Bastard" (77 is known as a bastard year, since it has several uppgrades from the later SC) I have the original bumpers and plan to reverse it someday. But for now I just enjoy driving it. Love the 2,7! Min was rebuilt some time ago, with sharper cams, SSI headers and a 2 inn 2 out muffler. Pulls so strong all the way to redline, wont ever grow tired of the snarl Your plan to lower and keep "originalish" sounds like a good one! Not to many of those left!

The price you paid was fair. Why can't anyone just enjoy a mid-year for the classic car that it is and always have the urge to 'backdate' it? It's a '77 - it's pretty much backdated as it is - as a shorthood.

I would leave it, get it mechanically sound and drive it everyday. I would resist the urge that everyone has nowadays to backdate everything and make their 911 something it isn't. Can you tell I am tired of backdates?

'77 coups just being '77 coupes are getting to be rare.

Good to see another 77s survivor in such good hands. Mine will stay narrow with the 2.7 as well, but I’m shedding some weight, stiffening up the suspension, and thinking of modernizing the induction. Fun cars!

Wow team 77!^^

I agree with all 3 of you guys. I'm also sick of the 'cutting up' of perfectly good cars.

The 1977 2,7s have the beefed up 7R case with Dilivar lower studs.

The 2,7 RS and 2,8 RSRs used the 7R cases.

The service booklet is there but the operator manual swiped..

John the real PO, said when he bought the car it had a ducktail and that he didn't like it on his 77. He sold it and gave his sloooowww body guy this 69 engine lid to paint. It's coincidentally red.

I would like to carefully remove the air conditioning but then it's not original so I'll have to think some more.

Problem with '77s is that, like my '75 never got any respect until as of late.

They were chaired, flared, turbo'd, slant-nosed, BBS'd, winged, dinged, painted guards red, side-ducted, fiberglassed, cut, chopped, white-gauged, pimped and lowered.

Now in 2018 there are very few left. Very few left in the world and for sale on any given day.

Maybe fix the primer spots and get it running safely - tires, brakes, tires again (replace them if they are more than 5 years old), fuel lines, etc.

That’s a great find and a fair price in this market! That patina is perfect in a lot of areas, it would be a cool option to blend in the paint where needed and leave the rest alone.

Looks great so far, good luck!

I had a 77s but it was a targa and had the turbo flares, which were done very nice.

I did not care for the targa. I had a spare 3.0 and a 915 with factory LSD I was going to put in it but decided to sell it all and buy a 930. good decision because I bought the 930 just before they went up.

I saw you worked on the brakes.

from what I understand the 77 is a great yr to have because they were galvanized but still used the thinner and lighter bodies.
personally I would long hood it with a duck tail and one of the old twin pipe sport mufflers that have both pipes that come straight out.

not that the 2.7 engine is really bad but there are some good 3.0's for sale. get a nice one for the price of the 2.7 rebuild and you have a better motor and one that is better for hot-rodding.
pull the calipers and make sure all the pistons are free. one piston in each caliper of mine was stuck. even though I did not do a rebuild on them and they were not in the best of shape they were extremely good brakes, even with cheap pads.

Color me green with envy...

IMHO, you will have more fun with a good runner in this shape than any of us zealots with nicey nice shined up ones...

ENJOY!

Oh, and keep the wife involved, it will pay off

My 1st Porsche was a 77S Targa.....An Excellent 911, that I used as a commuter/daily driver 15 years. That being said, I have long since moved to the "early sports purpose" dark side.....but I do believe that the middies are great cars and the 2.7S engine is one of my favorites to build into great hot rod motors.......

I'm also getting tired of the back-dating trend and cutting up good 911s....however, as I say this, I'm currently welding SC flares (updating?) onto my 69 rust bucket project (not to be confused with a good 911 yet), so I can run 7's & 8's......it's confusing.

The important thing is to have fun with the project.

regards,
al

nothing wrong with backdating.

I dont get taking a long hood and converting to short hood. the value of a long hood is really high and climb much faster than any short hood

I am not sure if there is anyone that likes those large bumper pads.
I even took the rear ones off my 930
