82 911 SC - Ancora Imparo

When I bought my SC, it had (has) white gauge faces. I somewhat prefer black, but I could live with white. However, on one of the gauges (speedo, I think), the white has aged and almost looks like it is peeling paint. So to rectify the situation, I removed the fuel/oil gauge and opened it for a look.
Turns out that the white gauge faces are not glued/screwed on top of the black gauge faces. It doesn't appear that there are black gauge faces underneath at all. Check out the photos. So I can't simply remove the white gauge faces. Do you think this is a kit that a PO purchased to mod the gauges, or did he have the original black faces painted? On the pictured gauge, the two sub-faces do appear to have a paint-like surface, while the big main face appears to have been manufactured as it is. The backside of that main face is a goldish color. If they were painted, the painter did an excellent job with the lettering. Ideally I'd like to put them back to black, but if that's an extremely expensive option I can just reassemble and live with them as they are. |

It occurred to me that if I could just find black overlays, I could screw/glue those on over the white faces. But of course I can’t find anyone who makes black overlays because why would most people bother to cover their black gauges with black overlays?! Any input you guys have would be appreciated.

Unless you can repaint them black and buy white decals for the script, your only other option is buying black gauges. Have you reached out to North Hollywood Speedometer?

No, I guess I should give them a call. It just seems odd- I’ve seen white overlays before, but I’ve never heard of people actually getting their gauges painted white. Is that something people have done?

They used to get painted (white, etc.) all the time before overlays became generally available.

Interesting. Well, I may have to send them off to be repainted, I guess. But anyone know some place I might be able to just get black overlays? I haven’t found much online of any color, with the exception of the silver ones our host sells.

Why don’t you list them for trade for black? Remember there is an ass for every seat

Hahah maybe a good idea. I called North Hollywood and Palo Alto and in addition to lead times of up to 4 months, repainting the set starts at $1500. I think I’ll wait on that...

I'd agree with this guy, not only in his evolution from bimmers to true german engineering, but in the desirability of the white gauges. They're not your cup of tea, but I bet they're worth something to someone else.

I'd trade my black for white

Bam! That ass / seat thing just happened!
Keep in mind that, save for the traders installing units from their same model years, they may both end up with gauges that are mismatched to senders.

I cannot opine with any certainty for SC versus Carreras. You'd have to compare sender part numbers. For example, you'd want to check oil temperature sender temperature stampings. Your other option is to have someone like PA Speedo or NH Speedo confirm / match senders (oil temperature, fuel level, etc.) senders to the gauges they will be used with.

I don’t believe the Carrera tach works in an SC.

You two could have reversed color tachometers; Singer Esque look.

Actually the white gauge faces are growing on me. Now that I installed LED lights I can actually see them in the dark!
