rear view mirror/loctite

Has anyone installed their rear view mirror on the windshield with Loctite 574? Any thoughts/pros/cons... TIA Philip

I just had to do this after knocking my mirror loose during overly exuberant inside windshield cleaning. I went to NAPA and paid ca. $4 for the specific Loctite mirror glue. Followed directions and it went on perfectly. John in CT.

Thanks John, but I'm an hours drive to civilization, and today is Sunday, nothing open. Just trying to work with something I have on hand... Philip

I don't think your going to like this, I tried the Loctite, I tried some adhesive pads and some "special" mirror glue off Amazon. None of them were any good and the mirror kept falling off. The only way I cured this was to abrasive blast a patch on the windshield the size of the mirror base. When it was a nice matt finish I used the Loctite and perfect, no fall-y off-y.

I used a rear-view mirror adhesive from your FLAPS. Most threads suggest not to use anything else.

Loctite at PP

Mirror Adhesive - Loctite Rearview Mirror Adhesive (.3 cc Kit),
Brand: Loctite
Part #: 37438-M258
Works just fine. Easy.

Critical: thorough cleaning with good solvent (e.g. Eastwood Pre, Heptane) to cut contaminants (oil mist, finger schmutz, silicone) on glass and mirror base.

Locktite 574 isn't even glue. Its a gasket sealant. I have used a fairly generic super glue when at a track event once and knocked mine off. A guy parked next to me had it and I had the mirror on and driving 15 minutes later. I keep a package bought at my FLAPS in the glovebox now in case it happens again.

For a more or less permanent install (why not?), use a two-part epoxy glue. JB Weld comes to mind as one option. Careful. Don't be too ambitious with the mix. You don't want a blob surrounding the mount. All you need are clean surfaces, a little bit on each contact surface and a prop rod to hold the mount in position until it sets up. Leave overnight for good measure.

I use JB weld. Take the base off the mirror and just glue that on and duct tape in place so it doesn't slide. When the epoxy gets firm in a few minutes, take the tape off and shave off the squeeze-out with a safety razor blade. Wait a day before hanging the mirror on.

Thanks to John's advice I finally attached my interior Porsche manufactured mirror. Three tries with mirror glue from permatex failed. The last try pulled some glass off the window when it came off. The JB weld method did the trick though!

Well the JB weld held until yesterday. Then the mirror fell off. The glue is firmly stuck to the glass. Came off the metal button clean. Thinking I’ll file some grooves in the button to increase the surface area for the JB weld.

Other thoughts welcome
