Mr Pro: I had this issue with my 73.5 when I had the 2.4 engine in it........I only discovered the problem much later after I had installed a 3.2 engine with external cooler.

I think your problem is you had oil and/or debris clogging up the engine cooler.....I would suggest pulling the tin around the cylinders and cooler. Then clean the whole area....I used a pressure washer.

The engine was rebuilt 5 years ago the owner said he only drove it 3 times and stopped because it was over heating he is original owner so I got to the car started it and 5 minutes later it was on fire I put fire out on top of right exhaust found oil cooler leaking badly I just replaced the oil cooler there is a 1000km on rebuild now with new oil cooler I just took it for 25 km drive and it got to 245 degrees over heat or top of gauge is 300 plus

250 is considered too hot by most on this forum. You should get an external cooler set up I found used lines, trombone cooler and thermostat sourced from the Pelican classifieds. My temps were as yours, around 250 in summer. The advice to clean your engine and cooler is good advice but you will still need some form of external cooler to bring down your engine oil temperature in summer.

Location? External air temp when oil temp indicated 250°F?
If Calif config, from 5 blade to 11 blade fan.
+1 external cooler.
No thermactors.

No thermactors period. If you have a 5 blade fan (Kalifornistan only), manditory to change to 11 blade fan; and for 20°C ambient temp that is all you'd need to keep oil temp just a needle width above the 212° marking line. BTDT for ~10 years. Added front cooler (Turbatrol, no fan) and temps always stayed below ~220 thereafter even in 38°C ambient. Engine has a lovely whine/howl at hi speed with the 5 blade, but just not enough air flow. Might pick up a cheap IR (remote) temperature sensor to see if you have a screwy oil temp sensor/guage combination (and so false readings) -- I say this because IIRC the oil/dipstick in the tank was too hot to handle comfortably with bare fingers when the engine was at 212 °F. Might search on other high oil temperature threads. If it really is hot, another consideration might be to test the oil thermostat.
