Need Squirrel Cage Removal Tips

Well, my front condenser add-on fuse finally came in handy. The fan finally failed taking out the 7.5 amp fuse along with it.

I already have a replacement motor but I can't seem to be able to remove the squirrel cage from the old motor shaft. I have removed the tiny allen screw but can't seem to break it free. I lubed it up with PB Blaster and have tapped it some to no avail. I'm afraid to use too much force because the squirrel cage is beginning to bend and twist.

Any tricks or tips you can share?
Much appreciate

squirrel cage removal

I had same issue. I had to heat it up a bit with a torch, or you could put in oven at about 350 for a few minutes - oven works great, we put our R/C model plane engines in oven to facilitate bearing removal.

Here's what happened when I tried to separate the two by tapping the shaft out of the cage with a punch. Fortunately Pelican let me return the unused replacement motor I had bought. Charlie Griffiths said some are beyond saving.

Thank you for the reply's. Already soaked it in PB Blaster overnight and it still doesn't budge. Definitely will not try the punch method , next is apply the heat idea.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.
Thanks again!

If all fails, take it to your nearest machine shop.

They will have pulley-five minutes...........

I still have an old fan hub puller called "The Ultimate Puller".
Used in the HVAC industry, it may be too big to utilize on that little fan wheel.

I pushed mine out with a punch. If I remember correctly, I supported the area adjacent to and around the shaft with some wood blocks so that area was braced against the force of the punch.

Given that you are replacing the motor, I'm assuming the old one is trash. If so, use a sawz-all to cut the shaft between the motor and cage. You can then set the cage on a socket that is just bigger than the shaft and use a punch to drive the shaft out, putting the force on the squirrel cage on the boss and not the flimsy sheet metal.

I also just destroyed the old burnt out motor to allow placing the hub on a socket to punch the cage off the shaft.

Okay, I successfully removed the squirrel cage by cutting the motor shaft with a sawz-all (like JRSIII and Jack suggested) and then used a socket and punch to remove it. Worked great!

Thank you all for your input.
