Armin's 1974 911 2.7L Gulf Blue Build/Restoration

Figured I'd say hi. I'm brand new to this community and just got my hands on a '74 Gulf Blue 911 2.7L. Original and matching engine. Looks like it's in great shape, 74k miles. This will be a project for my Dad and I. Figured I'd start a progress thread. We will take any advice or insight you guys have to offer. Looking forward to contributing and learning. https://imgur.com/a/bKM8XL4

Best,
Armin

Armando,

Wow, those are really low miles. Mine has about 200,000 more than that.

What does it need? Has it been off the road for a number of years? Plenty of help on this forum for mid-years.

Very clean. Early production? Might have nikasil cylinders if last four numbers of VIN is below 3000 or so.

Interior and engine pics please.

We will soon need a thread just for 74 guys.

If really original think on the word preservation, not so much restoration.

The seven inch wheels look pretty good. The original style mirrors are still available and will make it look even more period.

Another good looking narrow hipped bright trimmed 74.

Mine came with cookies, I should get some. Looks good with the dark finish and matching exhaust tip.

I’m thinking the mirrors here are painted Vitalonis.

Yeeahp - Vitaloni Tornados. Painted. I had some on my 75 as well. Welcome and what a beautiful blue narrowbody! I think that is one of my favorite colors on an air cooled.

Right now we need to figure out where it's leaking oil. I'm sure chain tensioners will need to be changed. Last time car was registered in the state was 2006. The interior appears well preserved. Still has original headliner and I was blown away by its condition.

Last four of serial # is below 3000. What does this mean regarding cylinders? Good or bad?

Honestly, I saw it driving to work a couple of times in a guy's garage lot. Something blue caught the corner of my eye, it was hidden behind some other cars. I just walked in and asked if I could buy it, but he wasn't really considering it. 3 weeks later, we started talking seriously. Turned out to be a real nice guy.

I’ve had three 74 911s and found the early two had nikasil cylinder bores. The nikasil lining is generally more durable/desirable than later alusil.
