Hello,
I recently purchased an early 911 and it came with some different wheels than I have previously seen. I was told they were fuch's, they hjave Porsche center caps and are a bit lighter than my steel wheels on my 914. So I am in the dark and thought I would ask for some elses opinion. Thanks, For All Input, Ron

Those don't look terribly a lot like any Fuchs I have seen, no. The crested petals are decidedly un-Fuchs-like. I could be wrong, though.

Need a better shot, but the outermost bead is not one I've seen on any I've had...

Nope, those are American Racing Equipment 'mags' which were really cast aluminum wheels, in the American Hotrod tradition ... only available in the 15" x 7" size, quite rare, actually, but probably not as valuable as 911R 15 x 7's!

A seller on ebay 2 month`s ago had 2 sets of those american racing wheels for sale. EACH SET OF 4 SOLD FOR OVER $700.00. They were not restored either. I have a set myself in like new condition with the same caps as yours which are the early fuchs style 3 prong. If you dont want them SELL THEM ON EBAY.

Didn't they call them Torque-Flite's? Jack |

I think its torque thrust. TORQUEFLIGHT is a chrysler transmission.

Jack,
I think the more common American version was called 'Torque-Thrust' ... but the ones drilled for the Porsche bolt pattern didn't have a model name. The only place I ever saw an image of those wheels was in Oscar Kovaleski's Auto World catalog in the '70s! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |

Like I said, they are valuable, but not quite at the $1K per wheel level of the 911R Fuchs!

Thanks Guys,
I am glad to hear they are so rare. I didn't think they were Fuch's but I just wanted to check. I knew they were 15 inch and I was guessing 7 1/2 for the width. They have spacers at all four corners of about 1 inch. And yes they do have the 3 prong Porsche caps. Well now that I know that they are indeed Aluminum, My dad guessed Magnesium, What would you reccomend to clean them up. The previous owner go the outside rim of one of the wheels looking real nice, with a buffer maybe?? Also just wondering should I try take the paint off of them because the more I clean the more silver I see coming through!! Thanks Again, Ron |

Warren,
Small world...I actually know Oscar Koveleski. As a kid, I drooled over the model car catalog he published. In the 70's he campaigned a Lola in the SCCA and was a pretty hot ticket. Saw him at Road Atlanta during that period. My wife and I lived in the Wilkes Barre, PA area for several years in the 80's and Auto World was in Scranton. A friend introduced me to Oscar at Watkins Glen in 89' at a SVRA event. By then he was doing hillclimbs occasionally...nice guy. Great sports car enthusiast. Come to think of it..."Torque Flight" was a Mopar tranny, wasn't it? I knew the American mags were Torque something... Jack |

The wheels are original Torque-Thrust "D" spokes. They were made in the early 70s for road racing Porsches. The "D" designation refers to the arch in the spoke that allowed extra clearance for disc brake rotors. These wheels are made from Aluminum (also available in magnesium), and measure 15" x 7" with 4 ¾ inch backspacing. By the way, those same type wheels were on Steve McQueen's 68 Mustang in the movie "Bullitt."

Warren was right again. I guess the guy knows about Fords too! The rims look like Torque Thrusts to me too...

Hey, I have a set of those that came with my car. I took them off because they were missing a couple of lug nuts and I couldn't find any that fit as they didn't use the normal Porsche ones. Any idea if new lugs are still available?

Definitely American Racing Mags. I recently stopped by the American Racing booth at a local hot rod show. The rep in the booth said that they hadn't drilled any 5X130MM wheel bolt patterns for a long time. These american mags were also offered in a 4 spoke design for 914's also. These were very good wheels for 15"s. Doug Cook racing also had wheels for Porsche. These were the two piece wheels that could be made into any offset you desired. Very light.
Good luck, David Duffield |
