My car was getting a little too hot for my liking at the Auto-X Saturday. There was a Chicago area RGruppe member there named Tony. He has a beautiful '71 911 ST with all steel flares. VERY good driver. Anyhoo he showed me his oil cooler opening which is simply an upside down horngrille under the bumper. I made the mod last night. What do ya think? I also switched to chrome grills. And I still need to form some ducting to the cooler and possibly install a couple of pull fans to the back of the cooler.

Great idea Shawn.. I will copy it one of this days.... an extra cooler in the drivers side will be even better.

Do you have any other pic of the ST? looks like a Targa..

It's an "S" bumper. I think it looks better than the over the top RS bumper.

That is a great idea. It looks very custom. Maybe you could add another one to the driver's side and use it for brake cooling if the routing worked.

Shawn, Just looked at your car description. 3.2 in an early car. What is your license plate... "ZZZZZZZ" aka- Sleeper?

That looks pretty clean, IMHO. My solution was to remove the passenger side battery box so that air could flow through the existing horn grill. That plus a regular push fan on the front has kept things pretty cool.

Hey Shawn,

That looks like a great idea...!!! My only concern from a personal perspective is the thought of cutting a hole in my S front spoiler. Point is that it's the original one that came w. the car, as ordered.

My wife (who has worked w. 911's since '79..) sez that an original *metal* S front spoiler goes for about $900.00-1k in crappy condition. So She's nix'd that idea as far as using the one I have now....

But she sez I have the option of getting a f/g one and cutting it up, as she thinks it's a great idea as well.

Yeah, dont cut up a real "S" bumper! Mine is glass.
You can't see the vents in Tony's bumper very well cause his upside down horn grills are actually molded into the bumper and painted body color. I just cut the opening and attached it with sheetmetal screws.

Shawn, Cool idea! (sorry, couldn't resist ) You may find that the directional fins of the grill alone are enough in the way of directing air. May not need a fan to get the cool needed? Time will tell.

I am having a problem at low speed and idling. I figured the vent would help low speed high rev driving(auto-x) but a fan might be needed for sitting in traffic. I have a fan just need to find the time...

10-4 on the low speed (read: stop & go traffic) and extended idle heat issue!!!

Man, I keep coming back here to look at this setup....I really like it!!

that is a great idea....I'd paint it body color if it were mine...

you could put another one on the other side to make it symetrical and make it a brake cooler duct and split the other vent's duties between your cooler and your brakes...
