There is a another thread currently running on this board - 'how honest are we with our wives & Porsche expenses, etc....' I've noticed some have mentioned their wife is "interested", "tolerant", "understanding","supportive." That's great.
But few if any have stated that their wife participates as we 'hobbyists' do. Neither does my wife. She is supportive, understanding, enjoys occasional track days, loves Porsche people in general - but no way could you call it involvement with a hobby, let alone a passion. Cars are more of a guy thing, usually, like fishing, weight lifting, football, and/or beer guzzlin'. About all my wife does habitually, as far as I know , is go to the gym - but I know she wouldn't if she didn't feel she had to.Basically, my wife has no hobbies! I can't imagine her needing such a diversion. Do/can wives have hobbies? Does your's? |

Oh Dan, I can hear it now! "I can't marry you, darling. It would remove the only passion you have in life!" Yeah. That'll work.

Well, believe it or not ... there are (or at least used to be) wives that loved to participate in rallys, autocrosses, and track events! Certainly not a high percentage, but perhaps 10-15% of the Porsche and Corvette owners I have known had 'enthusiast' wives in the fullest meaning. Of course, soccer has taken off in the past 25 years or so, and something had ro give, right?

I was going to respond to the original thread by saying that my wife does not have "hobbies". She likes to work in her garden but I think that's more to keep the house looking presentable than a hobby.
She claims she like to paint but I never see her doing it. I think hobbies are more a male thing. Women develop interests in areas that appeal to them but men's involvements more quickly become passions -almost obsessions- for things like cars etc. Women find meaning in relationships, men do as well but not to the degree that women do. Cars somehow captivate us, for others it's planes, model trains etc. We get great pleasure from these things, they don't require an emotional outlay from us- just cash and time. Cars are almost an extension of our personalities. So, when we say it's a male thing, that may be more true than we realize. Please feel free to ignore the above rant. I'm just trying to make sense of this 911 thing that has captivated me for 25 years. I'll probably never understand it.That's fine too. Bruce Herrmann |

Men have hobbies. Women have babies.
It sounds silly, but a male friend of mine once explained a psychological theory that men -- because they can't have give birth to a child, and overwhelm it with selfless (and even obsessive) devotion -- instead find objects (like cars) that they can devote themselves to. I don't know if I buy the theory, but any toddler would be pretty lucky to get the kind of time and attention my 911 gets. Then again, the 911 will never grow up and develop a mind of its own, deciding I'm the least cool thing on the planet, either. ------------------ Jack Olsen My Rennlist page • My Pelican Gallery page • My Porsche Owners Gallery page |

Maybe I have a bizzare wife, but she has what I would consider "hobbies". She grows orchids and roses, and spends a considerable amount of time reading catalogs and surfing the web. We have stopped at an orchid grower's farm more than once while on vacation. She also collects Craftsman and Art Deco "stuff" like art glass...spends plenty of time on eBay looking for interesting things. We will probably do a road trip up the central coast to visit some artist studios.
She puts up with my "hobbies" such as gigging as a jazz bassist once a week, and at different times, obsessing over bicycles, cars, and music gear. Other than the '87 debacle, I spend pretty much whatever I want on my stuff, although I turn things over rather than just collect more toys in an attempt to be "responsible" (ha!). I also don't ask when random boxes show up for her on our doorstep. |

Very interesting topic...
My wife likes to read novels, be frugal (coupons and sales), camping, and watch the popular sitcoms. Pretty lame for hobies in my opinion... The only thing that is kind of cool is camping and there is minimal work on her part that goes into that. She is very social with the neighbors and has plenty of walking friends and mommy groups which in an odd way could be a hobby. I think most women read novels and enjoy sitcoms... Both a complete waste of time in my opinion. Most of the time I just retreat to the garage or basement shop to drink beer and tinker with stuff. Also as a generalization I think men are more meticulous than women. Even when doing housework I am more thorough than my wife, which in our house is basically her job. ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |

I need not post as Adrian just typed my EXACT feeling on the matter! Even the comparisons to quality of housework which is her department.
Adrian, do you really camp or "car camp" like us. Car camp meaning, back SUV into woods and then eat grilled meat and drink lots of alcohol? Joe 68L |

Great topic!
Before I met my wife, she had no hobbies of her own. To some degree, she was a good trooper and ASSUMED some of my hobbies. She enjoys off-roading in the Range Rover (especially when she gets to drive). She likes to ride the mountain bike (on pavement only), rollerblade, ski. She hasn't been to any Porsche events yet, but I'm hoping to change that soon. I'm just glad that she likes my hobbies. I dated women who didn't. That made for a tougher relationship. Its important to share the hobbies, so that she can understand my obsessions and support them. With a 1-week old daughter she is keeping busy for now. Yeah, Adrian, you're right. It just seems to me that if one were to try to take away one of my 'activities', no matter how inane it may seem, I would fall kicking & screaming (uh, figuratively speaking). To my wife? No big deal, I suspect. Venus & Mars thing I suppose.
BTW - any single guys out there who can comment re their girlfriends? Is it just a marriage thing? |

I guess I am very lucky, my wife has her own hobby--horses. Since she has her hobby, it makes it easier for me to get away either at a DE or for me to go kayaking.

Hey Jim? Tracking a 914 and extreme kayaking ... is there a difference? I'm guessing the kayak is more responsive.
