Post Registering an out-of-state 911 in California. What should I expect?

I have an '83 SC that may need to be registered in California. It is currently registered in New England. Are there any surprises that I should watch out for? Is emissions going to be a problem?

An 83 must comply with smog equiptment. This means if you don't have a smog pump, cat and whatever other kind of junk they put on for California cars, you will have to. A one time exemption does exist if the costs are above a certian $$ amount, but it requires that all components be on the car.

Hope this helps.

I believe the 83 SC's didn't come with an air injection pump. So as long as you have the cat and original exhaust, and the car is running good, the smog nazi's should be an easy hurdle.

You need to do nothing but make sure that the original factory 02 sensor is in place, and the catalytic converter is in place as well.

On 80-83 there was no difference between California and "Rest of the US" cars. All had cats and O2 sensors...no air injection pump after 79.

Nick.

Chrisp--
I brought an '85 up from Texas and had no problems at all. Just be sure that you register it within 30 days (I think) or else CA DMV will hit you with penalties.

Make an appointment to do it - much quicker than standing in the ever-present DMV lines, and you can set up the appointment online.

welcome back to the Golden State

Is this car already yours? If so, nevermind. If you're buying it now, and then plan on registering in CA, there's a loophole that can save you $$ on sales tax. email if so.

I recently bought a 911 from Hawaii, and shipped it over, then registered in Calif. It didn't pass smog here in Calif, until after a tune up.
