Rear Deck Lid Seal.

The rear deck lid seal on our M/Y 86 measures 33 1/2 wide
with one plastic retaining screw on each end.

Every source I've tried stocks a replacement seal which
is only 31 inches wide, and, no mounting screw holes?

So where can I find the correct seal?

Thanks in advance,

Gerry

Hi 86 911 Targa- Thank you for measuring and posting! I am also very interested if anyone has any insight into this question. I am convinced that 1986 was a completely different strip than the standard part #911.512.129.00. '86 is clearly wider and longer than from '74-'85. Sorry I can share no updates.

I ordered one from our host & it was too narrow.

Tried two other sources, no joy....

I would even settle for a used one in good condition!!!

Thanks,

Gerry

Interesting Gerry. When I replaced mine, there were no plastic screws. So either it had been replaced or it never had them. I do not see any screw holes, where are they located? The replacement, from Pelican, measures 32.25 inches and yes it was about half an inch shy from the one it replaced.

Dave,

The screw holes are located at each end of the seal.

I'll get some pics in the am.

Best,

Gerry

I replaced mine in my '86 and it didn't have screws. I'll post some pics tomorrow. You can have my old one if I can find it.

Rear Deck Lid Seal.

^^^^^
Here's what I'm trying to replace.

If the replacement seal can be stretched, I'll drill the screw holes.

Thanks to all for your constructive comments.

Best,

Gerry

^^^ as you can see mine doesn't have those plastic screws and the length is perfect.
My guess is, judging by the age of your seal, that someone added those screws to hold it on.

Actually mine have the exact same plastic rivets as his did. The seal I bought on Ebay fits perfectly.

Nothing added.

This is the original seal that came with the car.

Where did you source your seal on eBay?

Do you still have the link?

Thanks,

Gerry

Isn't this the screw or at least the screw receiver he is talking about?

That is just a plastic piece that fills that hole. The seal is designed to fit along that little metal lip. I looked at a bunch of engine bay pics and it appears they made more than one style of seal. I think though that if you install the one you have by just pressing it on the metal lip you should be fine. They look a little weird and stick up at the ends at first but after a while they sit flatter. You may have to adjust your latch and lid bumpers as well.

The one I have is the original, and, is in dire need of replacement.

My choice would be to find the right size, and,
punch two holes on the ends for the attachment screws.

Gerry

Porsche 911 930 74 86 Rear Engine Lid Rubber Seal | eBay

This is the one I ordered for my 1986 911 and it fit perfectly. I did not use either of the rivets as it laid across and fits snugly without need of any aid. Hope that helps.

I ordered from your source, and, as you posted, the seal was an exact replacement.

Spot on! Well done!

Our host should have this size.

Best,

Gerry
