Engine deck lid alignment?
Hi. Has anyone got a tip for the alignment of the deck lid to the quarter panels? Basic deck lid on a 1970 911. Height is low at the rear window so shimmed it out but the lid hangs way over to the right by 5mm or so, can the hinges be shimmed to push it over as the slotted holes for the bolts don't have enough clearance L to R?
Patience, trial, and error may be the answers but thought I'd ask for any tips on what must be a common issue. Cheers |

HI. I rarely post or reply. (My sister-in-law calls me a "stalker"). Shims should be added / subtracted one bolt at a time. In other words, don't shim the entire hinge @ the lid, just shim one mounting bolt at a time. This approach changes the angle of the deck lid (trunk lid too) and allows for better alignment.

Be careful not to chip the paint right above the lid in the center when test closing while trying to get it right.

I would highly recommend removing the grill if you are doing any kind of major adjustments on the latching mechanism.
You will eventually reach a point when the pin is so far out of alignment, or too deep/shallow, that, when you pull the cable release nothing will happen. If the grill is off, reach in and manually release. Most of us have BTDT. Bill K

Yes, remove the grill. This allows you to reach in and adjust the hinge bolts without removing the decklid. I often shim the lid gap on the sides and then tape in place. Then you can adjust the hinges by reaching through the engine grill opening.
