Upholstery question
Having a local upholsterer recover some early Recaro E 30 sport seats. In the past, I have used "ribbing" on the top of the bolsters to join the perforated insides with the smooth outsides. Guy suggested using a smooth "cross-stitched" seam without a rib.
He claims that the ribbing wears more quickly as it is "proud" vs a smooth seam. Anybody have experience either way? Also wondering if I want to use an "accent" thread whichever way I go...seats are black and car is red. Wondering if a red thread would be interesting or too much. Feel free to post any pics you have. Thanks in advance... Speedo |

Your upholstery man is correct about the beading, it's a cheaper way of joining fabrics. Mostly all high dollar cars such as Ferrari etc use french seams in their seats. Looks better and lasts much longer. This person
opted for French seams on his Porsche seats. Looks great!

Wow...those examples look great! I am really glad I posted the question. Seriously, those exceeded my expectations. LOL
But I am the guy that works for .07 cents per hour to convert a rusty 912 into an R clone. I guess everything doesn't need to be that hard. Also glad that I refer upholstery to the pros. Keep the examples coming please. |

Yes, French stitching is very nice. Peter SC_RUF knows about this and had some great example pics. Lots of different sorts of French stitching.

Beading will take a major beating if your not careful getting in and out of the car. It hangs out and catches on everything. French seam is definitely the way to go. Plus it looks betters.
