Targa rear window removal
I'm wanting the windshield and rear window of my Targa removed at my house prior to taking it to get painted, and then getting them reinstalled after I get the car back. Does anyone know of a mobile company in Phoenix experienced/willing to do this?

Your not going to find any mobile service willing to take on vintage glass replacement especially the dreaded rear targa window.

Yeah. Don't even go there man. You need to find a local DIY guy in Phoenix that owns a Targa and has done it himself. He can help you remove it.
Found this in a search for you: "The targa bar must come off to access the top portion of the window seal. We cut the window seals - 25 years old and splitting. Gently remove the window trim. Then simply run a cutter parallel to the glass and cut through the seal. The window will lift right out." CharlieV

Not familiar with the Targa rear glass problem but know that removal is easy for the windshield normally. Just cut the rubber all around and push the glass out from the inside. Not something I would pay someone else to do. A helper for a few minutes is nice to have.

Most likely you will need to find a body shop guy that specializes in air cooled Porsches to find anyone willing to tackle it. The body shop guy I know here has done lots of them, and hates them. Even if you can get it out, where do you store it safely?

There are a lot of Phoenix area pelicans, so hopefully one of them can chime in with a good suggestion. I had the rear targa window on my 86 removed to replace the rear seal several years ago and the unexpected detail was the number of wires for the defroster. Even though the job looks perfect, only part of the defroster has worked ever since, so this job is a bit involved!

I had more grief with the damn windshield than the rear glass! Installing that is.. Removal shouldn't be the hard part.
All the trim needs to come off, pretty easy to see what goes first. |

As others have stated, it's involved but not hard to remove, installing one is a different matter.

Actually removing the rear is a pain too, usually seal is dried out,hard and has to be cut out while carefully avoiding defrost wires tucked inside.

Thank you ALL for chiming in, encouragement is good. Sigh. Brighton911, great link. My original plan with this was to take the rear out at the house, and store it in my living room on pillows. Somewhere through there I need to remove the peeling window tint. I'm planning on driving it to the paint shop today or tomorrow for the real estimate, I'll see if they want to take on the rear window before proceeding. On the big day, I'm not going to trailer it down there--I figure they can take the windshield out.

Window removal is not a job to be afraid of. Reinstallation, especially the Targa glass, is ... unfun. Doubt you'll find a non-specialist willing and able to carry it through to completion.

All these links are great!! 'LOVE this forum. In another search here it was suggested to call the local dealership because they probably have people they work with. I did, and they do! Well, sorta. The manager of their onsite glass people called me and gave me the number of a guy who used to work for him that does these, freelance. He's gonna swing by this Sunday and look at what I got. SO EXCITING!!!! It's finally happening, the final phases of resotoration. Aaaaaagghh.

The defrost really isn’t that important
Wire nightmare ale there is minimal edge to get the rubber seal to grab You’re not going to hurt the glass but it does break into a million pieces Bruce |
