EPS fan shroud doesn't fit - tips?

My EPS fan shroud does not fit into my '87 and I opened up the bottom grove for the key and have been filing the outside diameter to try to make it fit. I've searched and searched and other experiences vary from it installed the first time, to it "took 30 hours" of modification to get it to fit.

Does anyone have any tips on how much and where to take material off the shroud? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Pete

Photo's of the shroud and the area of your problem would help. What kind of material is it made of?

I took mine to machine shop. They shave 3/16" off the top half (0-180 degrees)
Then I went over to body shop. They cleaned and painted EPS to match body color.
Worth the effort in the end.

How did you determine to take material only from the top? I assume that was from 9 to 3 o'clock? I ask because some (duc hunter) said the shroud sits too high causing the air vanes to be trimmed? Would it make sense tot take 1/8" off the top and bottom from clock speak 10-2 and 8-4?

Thanks,
Pete

On mine, the bottom fit. It was very tight, but fit.
Same issue you have on top. So I machined only top 9-3 where engine shroud fits and bolt holes align. Additionally I opened 1 of the engine shroud bolt holes.
You'll get there.

Pete... that appears to be major misfit. Am wondering if you had discussion with EPS concerning situation? (If diameter is too great, it can easily be mounted on a lathe for trimming. Did this with Vertex housing for purposes of cutting out alt seat for a better fit. Bolt holes can then be tapped deeper if needed---assuming enough material.)

Looks like there is a German made reproduction part available, made out of magnesium for about $440 plus shipping. Could be a an alternative to the USA made EPS fan shroud. Who knows if it fits better..it should.

That's a fan housing not a shroud. The shroud covers the housing.

installed

I was able to get it the fan housing in yesterday after shaving 1mm or so off the outside diameter. As Duc Hunter reported, it sits a little high and as a result the air vanes interfere with the back of the large engine shroud. Going to try to reduce the fan housing height before modifying the air vanes.

Just found this thread. Glad to have been of some help. Mine is still in and ok. I am considering the CarPoint Magnesium fan housing. Not many people seem to have tried it, so no reports on the fit or not. If I get it and it works I will post accordingly.

Did anyone ever get the CarPoint Magnesium fan? If so, how did it fit? Thanks
