side mirror question

1987 carrera...
My RHS side mirror was hit while backing out from my garage....and is hanging on the door by its electrical wires. the whole mirror and its base were not damaged and neither the car door.
I can not figure out how is the mirror attached to the door...can someone explain or even better show picture of a part that does the trick. The Bently book show schematics of how to take the mirror apart but no reference to how it is attached to the door.

Hi david

it is not a big deal to rattache the mirror.
1st you have to remove completely your door panel
2nd ..loosen the bolt with little hook and insert it into the door mirror bracket on your door.
number 6c slides on the bolt number 14 that makes the mirror tight...the little hook goes to no.12 tight

David - a photo might help people give suggestions. For instance, is part 6B in the diagram above still attached to the door?

mirror

megerian, 6b is not attached to the door .
proprsche, where is #12 located, is it a metal piece or the holes in the door?

proporsche 12-01-2018 02:47 AM

hi David
yes ,the 12 is attached to the door by rivets-from inside It is a reinforcement. The whole mirror assembly goes on it with those two horn on bottom of 6.Then use an allen i think 5mm and by turning 14 the little hook will latch onto the 12...

ALSO... i DO NOT SEE #6C, It probably broke off and fell in side the door.
there is , however, a broken nut still attached to the screw inside the base...do you think this is the nut that was attached to 6c?

mirror

Ivan, 1987 carrera, as per bentley, does not have it as a separate part, it is riveted probably from the inside of the door, as you say...
I guess I have to strip the inside door cover, find the missing hook and welded back to the broken nut. I wonder if the part can be purchased?

proporsche 12-01-2018 03:00 AM

yup, that is what has happened..When you broke off the mirror the little finger got broken. You have to order new piece.....Yes the nut you see on the bolt is the leftover from 6C

Show us some pictures........

David,

Post some pictures of the whole flag mirror. The locking hook could be broken and partially remaining with the assembly. Thanks.

Cutting the wiring harnesses as opposed to de-pinning the electrical connectors?!?! So cringeworthy. Makes me want to get a rope and string 'em up!

Sorry about the troubles you’ve seen with your flag mirror. I noticed mine flapping some in driving at highway speed. I confirmed the whole assembly is a bit loose. This thread helps as I can likely remedy this by tightening the Allen bolt (I.E. #14 into 6c thanks for Ivan’s clarification). I plan to update this if successful.

Tightened it just now, test drive later. It’s a 4 mm Allen wrench.
