Blowout @ 80mph - Carnage Pix

Don't try this one without a clean pair of shorts.

I was driving the Sonoma home (IL) from Huntsville AL on Friday. Somewhere south of Seymore IN on Rt 65N I hit a roofing nail or the likes and immediately lost pressure in the left rear tire. The rear end of the truck hit the ground and all hell broke loose. When I got her pulled over I couldn't believe the damage. The tread of the tire was wrapped around in the wheel well. Fortunately the only damage done was to the bottom of the shock mount. Looks like lowering this truck just may have saved a Fuch.

I've lost tires in a similar manner back in the 70's. Was driving a girlfriend's Ford Torino at about 80 mph west of Big Timber, Montana when chunks of rubber from the left rear wheel started flying forward and onto the road ahead of us. When we stopped there were only sidewalls left but the rim was undamaged. After mounting the spare we pulled into the Coop in Big Timber and they mounted a new tire on the rim as we had just enough sidewall to prove it was a fully warranted Coop tire. Also lost a Firestone 500 at 65 mph in Arkansas on the front of a company car; nothing was left of the tire and I slowed w/o brakes and finished on the the rim ruining it. Office manager was rather irritated but after it happened to two other people driving company cars he pulled all the Firestone 500's off the cars. Cheers, Jim

Crazy bugger having Fuchs on the truck - sure does look good. I'm pleased you didn't hit anything solid as you slowed down

Glad to see you're OK!

One day I was driving our helicopter fuel truck down the highway (think fire engine, but 1000 gals of Jet fuel) and had a blow out one of the front tire at 65 MPH. Luckily I pulled it off the freeway safely, but I had to check my shorts after that incident.

What? You mean you DON'T have Fuchs on every vehicle you own?
What kind of Porsche guy ARE you anyway?

Tire was a Dunlop. Looks like it dunloped it's way off the rim. Bought the set from TireRack. They say it is common for a tire to shuck its tread when the rim edges slice it while hitting the road at high speed. Have to take their word for it, not like this happens to me every day.

You mean Fuchs fit on a GM? What about Fords?

I wonder what a set of those would look like on my Superduty??????

Nope you need to adapt the lug pattern or drill the hubs....

That tire looks like it was run flat.

That's what happens when a flat tire is run at highway speeds. The sidewalls get hot and fall apart. And it happens fast too.

With low profile tires sometimes it's hard to tell they are flat if you are driving in a straight line. They go flat and in a minute or two the sidewalls are toast.

Oh.

The tire ran flat long enough to haul her down from 80mph to the side of the road. The twin black marks and shock mount drag marks told the story.

Here's a pic of the adapter to put Fuchs on a GM:

I've thought it would be cool to have Fuchs on my flatbed trailer. It has a GM lug pattern. Hmmmm..................
