Say it ain't so? Wayne's 959 going up for auction...

Yup, just consigned the 959 for RM's Petersen Museum auction on December 8th. Basically, the car is too valuable to really enjoy driving these days - time for someone else to enjoy it after 11 years of ownership. I enjoy taking out the "smaller stuff" like my 1972 911 RS clone or the 914-6 rally car (or even the $65K Ferrari 360 I bought last year). Those I can leave in a parking lot at the movies and not worry about them throughout the whole movie. The 959 is a very special and unique car, and it was not that expensive when I bought it 11 years ago. We took it to the track, to get ice cream and coffee, to the Festival of Speed with child seats inside, etc. But times have changed (it costs $4K just to insure every year!).

This leads to a much deeper question that all of us (at least the more senior members of this forum) will face one day not that far into the future. Will my “baby or babies” stay in the family as part of our estates or hit the market in one way or another when we’re 90 and can’t realistically drive them anymore😉

I remember in the spring of 2000 right before I was leaving to go live overseas. My boss was approached by a guy who wanted to purchase a 959, and the 959 he was looking at was cheaper than the new loaded 996 Turbo that was coming out that summer. My boss told him to go with the 996 as he thought the 996 was the better car. He bought the 996.

My boss was very well versed in 959s - as the company he founded I worked at in highschool in Connecticut, and we did both of Ralph Laurens 959s and AmeriSpec was the first to federalize the 959. I often think of that guy and his $45K 996 Turbo now - if he still has it. Oh well.

The 959 is a special car. But there are many others. They aren't 959s - but once you have the experience it's cool to pass it on, especially when the market is up.

That was *exactly* the case when I bought this in 2007 - the Turbo was just about the same price as this 959. I thought that it was worth about $400K when I bought it. But at that time, no one appreciated it and even really knew what it was. I played the guessing game back the - when I told someone that I had bought a "1987 factory twin-turbo" they got all confused. Only one person out of about 20 or so guessed exactly what it was.

Iv never been fond of the 959s looks but i think they look best in black. Hopefully it goes to an enthusiast and not in a museum to sit for the rest of time. Good luck Wayne

Good call - it's the right time to sell her. Enjoy driving the other cars stress free and just recall the great times with the 959. I hope you have photos with the kids in the car, they will be worth more than money to you and the kids in 20 years past...knowing they buzzed around in Porsche history.

I have always been more impressed by the technology than the looks.

I remember trying to flog one that was on a showroom in Kobe Japan. On a trip home drove through Monterey CA and met the importer who had about a dozen of them in early 2000. The boss whoever he was never met me. I only talked with subordinates. They gave me the dime tour, one on the rack working on it. The other dozen or so were wrapped so tight with sheets and surran wrap, they didn't look like they were going anywhere for a long time and that was out in the parking lot! Unregisterable cars at the time.

All I wanted was 5% on the sale from Japan, but they were way over their head in sort of bonded area holding yard for weatthy people who had bought these cars, and they seemed to be holding the baby, or so it seemed. I even gave them a decent price.

I forgot to mention early 80s when the 959 came out. I was a Doorman at Weston Galleria Dallas. That was history, a 200mph car, learned later it had aluminum doors. History dosen't repeat itself, it can only rhyme. You can't change history and this 959 is part of that.

It is most certainly the right time to sell a 959. That was a solid move back in 2007 when no one cared for them. It would be funny to go back and talk to the people who told you not to back then.

Definitely a seller market right now and crazy how they were being "given away" only ten or so years ago when Wayne bought this one. It's downright ridiculous how the tide changes in the exotic car industry!

I've always felt the 959 has always been a strange car from a styling standpoint. It's beauty seems to depend on which side or angle you look at it. Plus I don't think one can fully appreciate the car if it hasn't been seen in person. The first time I saw it in the flesh, it took on a whole new look for me. Pictures really don't do it justice. There's subtle things that didn't jump out at me until I saw it up close. Like how the side view mirrors are tall and somewhat disproportionate- to allow them to see over the rear fender arches and spoiler, and actually serve their purpose.

Good luck with the auction. You deserve a good price for not only taking the risk buying it years ago, but also an additional return on your investment in the Pelican business!
