1972 oil tank differences?

I am starting to clean up the oil system on my 72 project car. I have run into a bit of a snag. This is a 72T. The oil tank does not have a provision for an oil sender. The rear of the tank stamping is just stamped. No hole. no boss. nothing. It is also missing the lower return bung for external oil cooler.

Is there a difference between the 72T and the E/S tanks? This is the first time I have noticed this difference.

Jamie,

I can't confirm it's original, but the oil tank in my 72 911T project has the oil sender.

My ‘72T came with both the sender and return bung.

I would guess that a T with the S package got the tank with them, and the base T with the non-S gauges and trim got the delete tank.

Tyson, I suppose the non-S package is also consistent with the Left fuel gauge not having oil oil level and the Fuel indicator being on the top with a blank plate on the bottom. And I thought it was a 912 gauge.

This must have been a fully stripped model. I guess I am going to have to source a different oil tank.

This makes sense. My 911T has S-gauges and the tank has the return port as well.

Seems like I recall seeing references on some CoAs about "S gauges and oil tank". If so, that would seem to confirm that if the car didn't come with the oil level gauge, the tank was not fitted for it.

Silly question perhaps, but wouldn’t there be a single return port whether there is an external cooler or not? Is it just different if there is an external cooler?

Jamie, BBll is a '72 with a modified tank. That may be a way to go. Jack Olsen showed some pictures of his modified tank when he was building his car. Naturally my search for a picture was hopeless. Basically he had his tank enlarged and I am sure he has a front cooler.

All m/t T, E, S for '72 used the same oil tank

the Sportmatics on the other hand used a different tank w/o oil level provision and different oil line connections

Bill. I am not so sure. Hence my original question.

This tank is also missing the extra sportomatic oil feed line on the external surface. The only connections are the supply feed on the rear lower corner and the drain plug on the bottom.

Gordon. I will have to check the archives or email Tyson to see what was done on the tank. I have been thinking about cutting off the side and adding a tube with an AN16 fitting on the bottom. Would not be too hard to do.
