68 Fuel Tank question

My 68 has been sitting for about 20 years. I've pulled the tank. Its not bad considering. Can I successfully soak the screen in Gunwash to clean all the varnish off it or just buy a new one. Can I fit a 10mm one and then reduce it to 8mm. These are quite a bit cheaper from our host. Can my gauge sender be pulled apart and cleaned successfully. Its got 3 inches of varnish on the bottom. Lastly I have a new fuel line. Can this be installed with the engine in situ. My tank is rotten with old fuel smell with what I would say is fine brown coating of rust on everything in the bottom 3 inches. Where the old fuel was.
Thanks Lyndon

Lyndon, If there are no holes which require welding. Clean the tank yourself.Wash it the old way...I got a piece of chain and attached several screws and bolts to the chain links. Put water first and shake it to remove any inside big scales and rust. Rinse at least 3 times. Buy a tank sealer kit and follow instructions. Your tank will be coated in such a way that looks like a ceramic coating inside!

Thanks. Yes I'm already doing that. But my concern is waistingtime on the sender and in tank filter if the out come is not worth it. I'm sure someone has been down this path.
Thanks Lyndon

Clean the outside of the sender and test it. If it works why mess with it? on the small screen filter just clean it, you just want to catch any small sediment. $100.00+ for a new screen filter!

I've successfully taken apart my 87 fuel level sensor, 901 741 801 00, and cleaned it with acetone because it was sticking.

There is a nut on the bottom of the sensor that needs to be removed and then slide off the tube. Be careful there are two guide wires for the float.

It's been awhile since I did this so there might be something else needed.

Great thanks.
What colour is the tank. All grey or just grey on the bottom. Mine is all black but I'm sure its been painted.
